Fired watchdog was investigating Trump administration arms sales to Saudi Arabia - POLITICO

The State Department inspector general who was fired by President Donald Trump late Friday night was investigating the president’s effort to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia without congressional approval, according to the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The revelation adds another layer to Trump’s decision to sack Steve Linick, who was also looking into claims that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his wife improperly directed political appointees to run personal errands for him, including walking his dog and picking up his dry cleaning.

“[Linick’s] office was investigating — at my request — Trump’s phony declaration of an emergency so he could send weapons to Saudi Arabia,” Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) said in a statement to POLITICO. “We don’t have the full picture yet, but it’s troubling that Secretary Pompeo wanted Mr. Linick pushed out before this work could be completed.”

Looks like Trump is getting creative in looking for ways to circumvent the appropriations process so as to avoid repeating the mess that came up with Ukraine and Office of Management and Budget statutes pertaining to the distribution or withholding of those appropriations. Clearly he's still looking to cheat again.

I figured that tasking staff to walk his dog and pick up his dry-cleaning was a little thin, investigation wise......

Most corrupt administration ever!!!

Yeah. that would seem to pale in comparison now.

A Democratic House committee chairman said the investigation might have been “another reason” for the firing of the inspector general, Steve A. Linick.

Saudis are bombing civilians in Yemen with US munitions.

5/18/20
WASHINGTON — The State Department inspector general fired by President Trump on Friday was investigating whether the administration had unlawfully declared an “emergency” last year to allow the resumption of weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for their war in Yemen, according to a Democratic member of Congress who asked for the inquiry. The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Representative Eliot L. Engel of New York, said that investigation might have been “another reason” for the firing of the inspector general, Steve A. Linick. The White House announced the firing Friday night, and officials said the recommendation to remove Mr. Linick had come from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Mr. Linick’s office, which has hundreds of employees assigned to look into fraud and waste at the State Department, was also examining the potential misuse by Mr. Pompeo of a political appointee to do personal errands for him and his wife, Susan Pompeo.

“We don’t have the full picture yet, but it’s troubling that Secretary Pompeo wanted Mr. Linick pushed out before this work could be completed,” Mr. Engel said. This weekend, after Mr. Trump notified Congress of the firing of Mr. Linick, Mr. Engel’s office learned more details of the circumstances around the arms sale investigation, leading them to think that the inquiry might have contributed to the sudden move against Mr. Linick by Mr. Pompeo and Mr. Trump. The separate inquiry into the potential misuse of the political appointee was still a potential factor, and there might be other motivations for the firing that remain unknown, an aide said. It remains unclear exactly what prompted the firing of Mr. Linick, since the inspector general’s office conducts multiple, simultaneous investigations into the activities of the State Department and its officials. Mr. Linick’s office was close to concluding the investigation into the arms sales.

The Saudis demanded some form of payoff in return for renting an entire floor at the Trump Hotel Washington D.C. Trump tamped down the ire of Congress over Saudi Crown Prince bin-Salman murdering Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Embassy in Ankara. Trump managed to circumvent a 2017 suspension of weapons sales to the Kingdom by declaring an “emergency” over Iran’s activities in the Middle East. Trump also had US nuclear technology transferred to Riyadh, and allowed sophisticated US weapons parts to be made in the Kingdom. And now the State Department Inspector General looking into weapons sales to Saudi Arabia is fired by Trump.

Looks like another Deep State Democrat who thinks it's his job to investigate his boss.

There is not a pie or quart of ice cream that Trump does not want 2 scoops of. He is getting a piece of that arms deal for sure. For Trump charity begins and ends at home

Looks like another corrupt act in an administration having a long list of them. Preventing corruption is why we have IGs.

Trump said he never heard of the guy, and just fired him because Pompeo asked him to.

That doesn't seem like a particularly good reason.

But would appear to be throwing Pompeo under the bus.

Says who? A lying democrat who tried to impeach president Trump?:lamo

That's actually the job of an IG.

To investigate a policy decision by the president to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia for possible criminal activity at the direction of a New York Democrat who just happens to be a major supporter of Israel? I don't think so. The whole thing stinks. Trump was right to fire him.

I didn't know government department and agency inspector generals had the power to impeach. Must not have been present for that civics lesson.

Pompeo has until July to declare for the US Senate........

Makes you kind of wonder about that failed Venezuelan operation to abduct Maduro. Pompeo said that the US had no "direct involvement" in that operation. So does that mean we had some "indirect involvement" in it, Mike? If so then just how indirect was it? Did we skirt the appropriation process on that too?

of course the Republicans think it is all a conspiracy...they would never admit that there might be wrongdoing on the part of the administration...

Jeez, I had forgotten all about Trump trying to blackmail the Ukrainian government into attacking his political rival. You need a scorecard to keep up, it was so much easier with the Obama scandals that caused Conservatives to lose their ****...

Black Skin -> Must be Muslim Born in Kenya -> Hawaii -> 50th State -> Flag Pin - > American -> Hamburger -> Dijon Mustard -> yellowish -> Tan Suit

Sure they would. Most just don't see stealing from charity, scamming money from children with cancer, bragging about sexually assaulting women, scamming with a fake university, etc. as wrongdoing. Somewhere in the bible Jesus must have said "Blessed are the con artists, for they shall inherit the earth." In Trump 5:5 I think.

You don't sound confident that Trump was following the law.

But then, none of his supporters ever do.

And Saudi Arabia gets along pretty well with Israel, so your conspiracy mongering comes out flat.
