Actually I think the diplomatic and political repercussions that would follow if Finland and Sweden joined NATO would be are more shattering than folks realize. If Putin came out of this war with a stronger NATO and MORE nations arrayed against Russia...MORE containment, my thinking is that this would have to shake the confidence of the Russian people and the elites about the cost of his leadership.

I can't think of anything that would be more damaging to Putin than this undeniable blunder.

"Both Finland and Sweden are clearly moving toward NATO membership," Leah Scheunemann, deputy director of the Atlantic Council's Transatlantic Security Initiative, told Insider.

Finland's president said this month that the country would review the "alternatives and risks" related to membership, and Finland's prime minister, who previously ruled out pursuing membership, has said discussions on joining should take place with the goal of building a national consensus.
