Been thinking bout leaving the US for quite some time now - might just do that in the relative near future....

Among other reasons, I want my kids to grow up free, if there is still a country out there that allows that....

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has been to Finland and what can you tell me bout that place?

Thanks in advance! :)

Never been there, but there was a cell of Fins at my college. The girls are smoking hot but the language is one of the harshest sounding language I have ever heard. I suspect it would be very hard to learn.

You are leaving the USA so as to be free? Is not USA the land of the free and the home of the brave to begin with?

I could propose Dardania whilst you are considering Europe. But free from what do you want to be exactly?

I had known a friend from Suomiland (BTW this is the name the Suomi's that live in this country that you are considering call themselves) that gave much information about the place:

They have a thing with Swedes who have cursed the Suomi with the meaningless name to inhabitants there such as "Finland."

The weather gets extreme the more north you go. Somewhere there it should be the case that there is 6 months of light and 6 months of darkness. I think they have constructed a meaning of "Suomi Sisu" just to fight of these imposing environmental pressures.

If you want to earn some easy money all you got to do is go study in the university. They pay you instead in Suomiland so no worries for that, further their education is considered highest quality where the word "drop out" does not rings any bells.

Their language is Sami.

Near the Baltic is a split between Summer and Winter. More North you get the longer winter lasts.

I could propose Dardania whilst you are considering Europe. But free from what do you want to be exactly? To be even more forthcoming, I'm sick these days - sick with worry. I worry about everything (like the NSA, the apparent rising tide of socialism/communism in this country, the National Defense Authorization Act, etc.). AND I want to be free from worrying, at least as much as possible. Thinking a change of scenery may do me good - picked Finland for the time being, but haven't ruled out other countries as well (if I ever get the money to move out, mind you).... But the thing I worry bout the most is me kids (I don't have kids yet, but intend to) and their future. I don't want them, for instance, attending govt. schools and becoming indoctrinated clones, if you get me drift....

Thanks for your post - very informative!

Giving up on us? I've given up on my state of Maryland but not giving up on the country as a whole. The post 9/11 surveillance state, Patriot Act and attacks on our 2nd Amendment rights are barely a decade old problem that can be reversed; as can economic trends.

What is it exactly you wish your children to be free from? I don't know much about Finland but would need that question answered to offer any recommendations.

I haven't given up yet, mind you - will wait a few more years before I make my final decision...... Having said that, I used to be optimistic - am probably a pessimist now. If I ever get the money, I will most likely go somewhere else...... Will do what I can to help out the libertarians and freedom fighters here in the meantime....

As far as me kids, I want them to be free from govt. tyranny. It's as simple as that - I don't want them to live in slavery, in other words.... For instance, I want them to be able to make lots of money and be millionaires - and be able to keep their money and not have to give it back to Uncle Sam..... Don't know if Finland has a better system than ours or not, but would be curious to find out....

As an American living permanently in Germany, I understand where you're coming from. However, after being here almost 4 years, I realize how good I had it back there. If my wife weren't German and we hadn't already made hard plans to stay, I'd go back.

I'm not saying you won't like it, but the culture shock can be extreme. Also, get ready to pay taxes out the ass, and get paid a fraction what you make in the states.

You should go to Finland and live among the populace for at least 3 months. This is not a decision to be taken lightly.

The language is definitely hard. It's not related to anything else in Europe. It's really an anamoly, and a really weird language. Anyway, it's still a great country.

Good luck!

The money earned abroad is best spent in Dardania. The reason: It really never does.

I have been meaning to ask you, which particular cultural shocks have you come to notice most while changing environments from USA to Deutchland?
