Until recently, a murderer was sentenced (HERE_CANADA), to 'life' with a chance for parole after 25 years regardless there being one murder or multiples. This current case considered the fact that more than one was murdered, and, the sentence was life with no opportunity to a parole hearing for 40 years.
Obviously in the earlier cases the second or more murders were meaningless in the eyes of justice.

Travis Baumgartner was sentenced to life imprisonment for three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. He was the first person to be sentenced under a change in the law that increased parole ineligibility periods for multiple murderers.
