Even with minimal research, anyone can tell that world politics is going down a dark path. The layers of deception that have clouded oppression for years have collapsed, and yet those in power simply pay no heed to their exposure. Governments beat back protestors, rid themselves of competitors, disregard regulations, and seek power above the needs of their own people. Racists, sexists, homophobic politicians – they don’t fear scrutiny, because they already have the power they covet. The people of the world are being beaten in submission as the leaders realize they have whips. To make matters even worse, a constant stream of tragedies and crises has rocked the world in rapid succession, to the point where corruption is but a minor addition to our pile of plagues.
Overwhelmed by it all, it is easy for people to give up and give in. There is so much to consider, and the problems worsen with every passing moment, so it seems impossible to find salvation in the heart of the chaos. But this is a time in history where we can simply not afford to let go. The past has been marked by decades of slow, but increasing progress, and the future holds dangers of environmental and economic disaster. What we do now will no doubt shape the world in drastic ways, and if the scales are being tipped in the wrong direction, it is our moral imperative to tip them back.
The power of people united can be opposed by no government on Earth. People who hold resolve greater than any fear are the most powerful force on the planet, and it has been proven time and time again that no regime can truly stand forever. Earlier this year, protests over the death of George Floyd only attracted a fraction of the population of the U.S., and yet, it was enough to require military and federal intervention. Once the fear of retribution is gone, the people can push their own limits and enact their will in full.
After all, the power of all leaders comes from their people, and the duty of all good leaders is to enact the will of the people. If they abandon their charge, then the foundation of that leader’s power is a lie, kept aloft only by a corrupted system. We cannot allow lies to dominate our world, no matter how terrifying the fight against them to be. A time is coming when the people of the world will truly stand together, and the many will stand against the few who hold the wealth and power needed to save our world from oblivion.
We have made mistakes, as both people and government. The poverty and pollution and inequality is a testament to how blind we have been as a species throughout a great majority of our lifespan. However, the past is unchangeable, and all we can do is learn from it. If those lessons are not learned, then the present and future are wasted as well, so while we can, we need to do our best to understand why we cannot allow corruption to persist. Even when the enemy we stand against is daunting and powerful. Even when the risk is so great, and the consequences so terrifying. Even then, we must stand.
