Am I the only person on Debate Politics who is excited at the upcoming World Cup? The World Cup is the biggest single-sport event in the world. The 32 teams who have qualified for the finals are drawn into eight groups of four teams who will play a round robin. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Round of 16 (also known as the eighthfinals.)

The U.S. is in group E with Italy, Ghana, and the Czech Republic. While Italy is the seeded team in the group, at 13th in the world, they are actually the third ranked team in the group based on the latest FIFA World Rankings. Czech Republic is ranked 2 and the U.S. (who JUST missed out on being one of the eight seeds) is ranked fifth. Ghana is ranked 48, though they have some dangerous attacking players.

These teams will fight for first because the second place team will almost certainly have a date with Brazil in the second round as they are grouped in group F with two Asian Confederation members (Japan and Australia) and Croatia.

23 days and counting until the Germany-Costa Rica opener.

Looking forward to it as I do every 4 years. It is after all the biggest sport on the planet and the biggest single sporting event of all.

The US has a slim chance of progressing as Italy are Italy.. mega team of Europe and would require a very bad day to lose to the US (but hey it has happened before). Ghana is brilliant on a good day and are about the only team the US has a chance of beating. The Czechs are probally the best "team" in Europe as they have played together for years, but that of course is a problem as thier average age is over 30. They are former finalists in the Euro Championships and if I remember right did not lose a game qualifying.

Other teams to watch are of course Brazil and Ronaldino (playing tonight in the second biggest sporting event on the planet, the Champions Leauge Final in Paris), Ronaldo, Kaka.. heck the whole team are brilliant.

Argentina are also up there with among others the new rising star Lionel Messi, the semi old hag Riquelme and a few more stars. A team that should make the quaterfinals if not the semis at least

England have some good players but have yet to prove thier talent on a big scale. Getting Rooney back on the field is key, unless Gerrad can produce something insane again and the others finally will wake up and play football instead of looking in a mirror and checking thier hair.

Of course one should not forget the hosts Germany, the only nation that can go through a whole tournement playing like crap and yet win or get to the final regardless.

Portugal might have a good chance as well as Spain, but these teams have always been under achievers, considering the stars, the national youth teams and the nation leagues.

Just about every team can make it in the tournement and there are very few, if any teams that are viewed as cannon fodder for the big teams.

Only sad part is the total lack of respect or interest shown by many Americans.. but then again we Euros could give a rats *** about baseball and american football :) . At least this is a true world cup, and the winners are world champions ;)

I love soccer (although I'm a girl  ). I'll be in Australia when the Wolrd Cup is aired but I will still watch.

I don't picture either England, France, Italy or even Brazil winning this year. I could easily see a team like Czech Republic to win or a country we don't expect at all.

I'll follow it, don't really have a team to back though, needless to say Wales absolutely suck at football. Hope Germany come back from the disaster they suffered against England, and of course those two meeting is always good.
Of course most of the members of DebatePolitics are from the US, but I'd actually like to see their team do well, if only to watch the country taking a sudden interest in 'soccer'.

I disagree. I think the U.S. has a good chance of advancing. In two of the last three World Cups, the U.S. were grouped with the team touted as being the one able to make a run at the title (Colombia in 1994 and Portugal in 2002.) IN both occasions, the U.S. beat them and contributed to their first round elimination. I expect the same to happen with the Czech Republic. The Czechs did well in Euro 2004, but European cinderellas have a history of bombing out in their next major tournament. Also, the U.S. has a formula that can exploit Czech weaknesses - their lack of speed and age. The U.S. is one of the fastest and most fit teams in the tournament, and Claudio Reyna is a master ball distributor. If he can get the ball on the flanks to Landon Donovan and Damarcus Beasley, the Czechs AND the Italians will have a tough time.

Don't forget, this is the same team that would have beaten Germany in the Quarters last time around were it not for multiple major errors by the officials.

Other teams to watch are of course Brazil and Ronaldino (playing tonight in the second biggest sporting event on the planet, the Champions Leauge Final in Paris), Ronaldo, Kaka.. heck the whole team are brilliant.

Agreed they they are brilliant, but Ronaldhino looked very human last night in the Champion's League final.

Argentina are also up there with among others the new rising star Lionel Messi, the semi old hag Riquelme and a few more stars. A team that should make the quaterfinals if not the semis at least

But Argentina has been slumping of late, losing to teams they shouldn't be losing to.

England have some good players but have yet to prove thier talent on a big scale. Getting Rooney back on the field is key, unless Gerrad can produce something insane again and the others finally will wake up and play football instead of looking in a mirror and checking thier hair.

Rooney won't be back until the second round by most accounts. Without him, they may suffer the fate of Zidane-less France four years ago.

Of course one should not forget the hosts Germany, the only nation that can go through a whole tournement playing like crap and yet win or get to the final regardless.

They have played lousy of late and have a tough first game against Costa Rica. IF they don't get their acts together, they may find themselves behind the eight-ball on opening day.

Portugal might have a good chance as well as Spain, but these teams have always been under achievers, considering the stars, the national youth teams and the nation leagues.

Portugal DID get a pretty good draw, and I hope they beat the Dirty Mexicans. Spain is the perpetual underachiever.

Just about every team can make it in the tournement and there are very few, if any teams that are viewed as cannon fodder for the big teams.

Togo, Angola, Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago are good cannon fodder candidates. GER 8 KSA 0 - can't ever forget THAT lopsided result.

Only sad part is the total lack of respect or interest shown by many Americans.. but then again we Euros could give a rats *** about baseball and american football :) . At least this is a true world cup, and the winners are world champions ;)

Agreed, but this is one American who is pumped and will be watching long after the U.S. is eliminated (if it is :) Hey, I will support my team until the end, win, lose or draw.

Well, Brazil is going in as the clear favorite, but after them, you could make an argument for about ten teams or so. This field is much deeper than in recent World Cups, and should make for a gripping tournament.

I will be supporting England, though I very much doubt that this will be our year - I thought this even before the injuries, which will now be an excuse when we don't win. Looking forward to seeing more of Peter Crouch's dancing goal celebrations - if he keeps knocking them in the net, he'll be like an 80's disco throughout the tournament!

Keep an eye on Steven Gerrard. This could be a great World Cup for him, if only he played for England as well as he does for Liverpool.

England is my second team after the US. We will all be waiting for the results of Wayne Rooney's MRI tomorrow with baited breath. He is essential to any deep success for the English in this tournament.

I agree with you on Gerrard. He has really blossemed in club football over the past 12-18 months and I am looking forward to seeing him on the world's greatest sporting stage. The preview magazine on sale here in Taiwan has a feature on Gerrard. After reading it in Chinese, I wonder how much was lost in the translation from the original English.

77 hours and counting!!!!
GO USA!

I swear to God I'm sick of hearing about it, I'll be supporting anyone against England. I'm not like this usually, I'm usually quite supportive of other British teams. But if they won this we would never, NEVER, hear the end of it. They've been invoking the old testament of '66 every opportunity they've had. No thanks, I can do without that. You're right that they'll blame it on the injuries if they fail, no excuse if you ask me. A successful team is more than one man, if their chance hinges on Rooney alone then it should be considered no chance at all.

Gerrard's equalizer in the FA Cup final was pure poetry. You seen it ludahai?

A couple of comments. One, most of the top contenders rely on one primary scorer and if you take that one player out of the mix, then it is hard to imagine where they will score goals. Togo is the most obvious example (then then again, they are hardly a contender), but France and Brazil are two of the few top teams that really have two or more top notch goal scorers (they are all over the Brazilian line-up and the French have Henry and Zidane.) Owen showed promise, but he has fizzled out and Beckham is merely a free-kick artist. However, those players will play valuable support roles for a healthy Wayne Rooney.

The U.S. is another team with two legit goal scorers in Landon Donovan and Eddie Lewis, DaMarcus Beasely and John O'Brien are also threats. Claudio Reyna and Pablo Maestroeni are both capable of running the midfield and a much improved defense anchored by Oguchi Onyewu and Kasey Keller is one of the best keepers in this World Cup, the U.S., while not really considered a contender, will be one of those teams that others would rather avoid if possible, because the U.S. is getting to the point where they can beat any team on any given day.

There are a lot of teams that you can make an argument for if Brazil falters. Remember that no team has repeated since Brazil did in 1962 and no South American team has won in Europe since Brazil did in 1958 in the Sweden World Cup. The last time a defending champ did not advance to the second round before France in 2002 was Brazil in 1966. I don't think Brazil will fail to advance from this group - not like they are in group C or E, but let's not engrave their names on the trophy yet like some people want to.

Now, you know that I am an Arsenal fan and am still bitter at the ref from the Champion's League final, but yes, that was a beautiful goal. If he can finish with any consistency with the national team, he will be a real asset for England and will be vital if Rooney can't play.

I met a lot of Brazilians both during the 1994 World Cup in the USA as well as the 1996 Olympics (the matches were played at the University of Georgia in a stadium literally a five-minute walk from my apartment.) They were a lot of fun, even when they lost the semi at the Olympics.

I'm ecstatic for the tournament again this year, and need to find bars in DC that will be showing the games asap.

Last cup, my entire soccer team would get together early morning at one of our houses and watch as much as we could, pretty much the entire time we didnt have to be in school. Now, work is going to take up more time, but I can watch the others in bars...

I miss really passionate soccer fans. During most of college, I lived in an apartment with a Brazilian, a Brit, an Italian, a German, a Puerto Rican, a kid who grew up in Argentina, and a kid who spent a year in Ghana on study abroad. The kid from Brazil got a special brazilian soccer channel on his direct tv, which was amazing. We've all moved out by now, but I cant even imagine what the cup would be like if we were all in the same house together now.

We have multiple bars in TAICHUNG showing all of the games (even the 3AM games.) I am sure you will have no problem in Washington - even though you have the opposite problem than we have time wise.

I'm going to watch some paint dry. Then if I have the energy I will watch my grass grow

I am supporting America and Iran. I am supporting Iran because they are funny ducks...oh yes....

I just bought my official brazilian soccer jersey. woo hoo!

You won't want to miss the Iran-Mexico game. The fans are at each others throats already in the Group D forum of bigsoccer.com.

Although its a virtual impossibility imagine usa v iran i think if one game could really export "soccer" to the US thats gotta be it.

England all the way dont what anyone says i know we can do it. Besides i owas so devestated last time i went out i could of kicked a kitten through an electric fan.

Yeah I can't wait either, even though my beloved Northern Ireland isn't in the tournament, (but we beat England 1-0, that was our World Cup final).
The World Cup is the greatest show on earth, not the "superbowl".

I think the US has a good chance to reach the quarter finals, they get increasinly good every year - in about 10-20 years they will be up there. However they do not play hard competition regularly (except possibly Mexico), which is a disadvantage.

I think Brazil is going to win it, if they play their best, no team can match them. Argentina and The Netherlands are the ones to look out for IMO opinion. I would love to see The Netherlands win it. Portugal had their chance, they blew it. France are not stable enough. Czech Republic do well, but their side is on the worng side of 30 this time. And Italy... it depends if they actually turn up or not.

As a non-English UK national, I do not want to see England win it. We along with the Scots and the Welsh are already sick and tired of the whole England ads, arrogance and boasting. They do this every tournament, but this year has been unbearable (because they actually think they will win it). And if they do win it, the rest of us will be hearing it for the rest of our lifes (and i'm only 22). Please god, do not let England win it.

It will never happen, but US vs Iran would be interesting lol.

Especially given that the earliest they could meet is in the semifinal.

Well, England got a boost with Rooney being able to play, though I would be surprised if he goes the whole 90 against a very tough Paraguay side. Him with Owen together will be real formidible up front.

We don't often agree on politics, but we are in full accord on this one.

The U.S. should be competitive in the Group of Death and if our boys in blue play to their potential and consistently, they have as good a chance as anyone else of advancing.

The competition is a justifyable knock. I have been critical of not accepting invitations to play in Copa America on the US soccer forums. Hopefully that will change as I believe that cost the U.S. a chance at being seeded for this World Cup.

I think Brazil is going to win it, if they play their best, no team can match them. Argentina and The Netherlands are the ones to look out for IMO opinion. I would love to see The Netherlands win it. While I do support England, I understand your point about the ENglish. They still strut on about 1966 FORTY YEARS down the road. While I know they will be insufferable for the next forty if they win, there are too many guys on the English side that I simply enjoy watching in the EPL week in and week out to not wish them well (except for John Terry and other Chelsea players.)

It will never happen, but US vs Iran would be interesting lol.

Agreed. Revenge for 1998 would be nice.
