Fidel Castro's statements on Israel called anti-Semitic
Fidel Castro's statements on Israel called anti-Semitic - Miami-Dade Breaking News - MiamiHerald.com

By LUISA YANEZ

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Broward County is denouncing anti-Israel statements made this week by former Cuban President Fidel Castro, which she calls ``outrageous'' and ``anti-Semitic.''

Castro, who often issues his musings on world affairs through the government-run media, said this week that:

``The hatred felt by the state of Israel against the Palestinians is such that they would not hesitate to send the 1 ½ million men, women and children of that country to the crematoria where millions of Jews of all ages were exterminated by the Nazis,'' Castro said. ``It would seem that the Fuehrer's swastika is today Israel's banner,'' he said, referencing Adolf Hitler
Steven Spielberg visited Cuba and met with Fidel Castro during 8 hours in 2002. He said that this meeting was “the eight most important hours of my life.” I wonder what will be Spielberg reaction to Fidel anti Semitic remarks. Will he change his mind? I hope so; he is a talented filmmaker and honest man. He could make a movie like "Schindler's List" exposing the Castro’s gulag.

Castro said something stupid. Details at 11.

Castro is a cruel tyrant who has enslaved the Cuban people for 51 years, dilapidate the island resources, banned dialogue and peaceful protest, and doesn’t tolerate dissent of any kind. This is the guy who lash out against the State of Israel, an amoral and compulsory liar, a machiavelic character.

Is there any difference between objecting to Israel's actions and anti-Semitism?

Castro is pretty irrelevant. He has one foot in the grave and said something on par with Pat Robertson or some other aging ideologue with creeping senility. He probably wears adult diapers, for Christ's sake!

Who gives a crap?

What he said was absurd, but how is it anti-Semitic?

Pretty much, yes.

I know the word "anti-semetic" has become a much important part of the PC folk's vocabulary more so than vowels, but do you care to bother explaining what part of his statements are anti-semetic? The part he believes Palestinians are getting slaughtered (excuse me for thinking Arabs where semetic peoples) or the part he criticize's Israel?
Pathetic.

LMAO. I was just thinking the same thing.

Idiotic, inaccurate, and inflammatory, yes. Anti-semetic? It is according to EUMC, which through recommendations of RAXEN and the OSCE, defined it as such:

“Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

“Such manifestations [of anti-Semitism] could also target the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity. Anti-Semitism frequently charges Jews with conspiring to harm humanity, and it is often used to blame Jews for ‘why things go wrong.’ It is expressed in speech, writing, visual forms and action, and employs sinister stereotypes and negative character traits.
Contemporary examples of anti-Semitism in public life, the media, schools, the workplace, and in the religious sphere could, taking into account the overall context, include, but are not limited to:

Calling for, aiding, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion.

Making mendacious, dehumanizing, demonizing, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as a collective—such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.

Accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group, or even for acts committed by non-Jews.

Denying the fact, scope, mechanisms (e.g., gas chambers) or intentionality of the genocide of • the Jewish people at the hands of National Socialist Germany and its supporters and accomplices during World War II (the Holocaust).

Accusing the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state, of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust.

Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations.

Examples of the ways in which anti-Semitism manifests itself with regard to the state of Israel taking into account the overall context could include:

Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination.

Applying double standards by requiring of it a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation.

Using the symbols and images associated with classic anti-Semitism (e.g., claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis.

Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.

Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel.

The EUMC makes clear, however, that criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded in itself as anti-Semitic.4

So yes, it IS anti-semetism.

Anti-semetism refers to racism. I dont care what some retard organization thinks it is. If the man thinks Israeli's actions are like that of the Nazi's, then so be it. He didn't make any oven jokes, or refer to the West as being "Zionist occupational governments", which is racist, yes. These organizations know no boundaries. Given the chance they will expand the definition of what it means to be anti-Semitic to such a point that freedom of speech becomes non-existent. Therefore, for the sake of Democracy, i dont care what this organization thinks, says, or publishes.

And that would be anti-semetic. I don't care whether you agree or not.

Yes, according to some ****ty organization with no legal value, hence i do not care either until the government starts enforcing this crap.

You're just pissed because it's documented somewhere and used by the EUMC (the European Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia) EUMC studies racism and xenophobia in the EU and makes recommendations to the EU in how to manage it. Your assessment that it is a "****ty organization" is nothing but sour grapes. And plenty of anti-semitism and racism is not enforced. The question is not a legal one. It's a definitive one.

Im pissed because a bunch of whacked out idiots who would rather pierce there eardrums with hot wax than hear Israel get criticized are being given the powers and responsibilities to restrict my freedom of speech the way they see fit.
I actually agree with much of the definitions of anti-semetism on that list but some of them are just BS.

Read what I posted, again... especially the last line. Calm yourself down and recognize that the list identifies anti-semitism and how it can relate to attacks towards Israel. In no way does it claim that criticizing Israel automatically equates to anti-semitism... in fact it says the opposite, and in no way does it restrict your freedom of speech. No one is telling Castro that what he did was illegal. He can say what he wants. However, that does not change the definition of what he said.

Quick question. Does anti-Semitism hold a longer prison term than racism in general?

In the US? As far as standard procedure goes, no, but obviously specific situations are dependant on the individuals involved. Overall, I'd say no. I don't know about other countries.

Give me a second to find out about Europe since this organization concerns Europe.
I'll brb.

Its precisely this rule that this organization believes to be "anti-Semitic" which is the bases of my concern (and you have only posted probably not nearly all of the points this organization has mentioned).
Now, i have a problem with this, you see. Especially if it means i could get jailed for being anti-semetic so its nothing that should be taken lightly.
Try waving nazi flags at a German event outside of Germany (party affilation) and see if you get arrested, or see if it is considered racism to compare contemporary German policies with the Nazi's.
This BS is simply aimed at oppressing freedom of expression, displeasure and dislike of Israel's policies. Its stupid.

It's aimed at stoping/dealing with anti-semitism. There is a difference between saying, "Israel's policies suck" (not anti-semitism) and saying, "Israel's policiies are just like the Nazi's" (anti-semitism). It's the same thing with how one criticizes any group.

Not really. I associate Nazism with fascism, opression, violence, ignorance, racism, racial superiority.
If somebody believes Israel is treating Palestinians like they themselves are racially superior in a violent, oppressive way, then why not. Yet it wouldn't be anti-semetic to compare Israel with Mussolini's policies. This organizations definition of anti-Semitism doesn't stick.

Calling Israeli policies fascist is not anti-semetic. Calling them similar to the Nazi's is. I'm pretty sure you can see the difference.
