Hi all.

I was hoping posters could give me their honest opinions on what monarchy was like in the middle ages. I want to know more about the period. So please add any comments you would like to, but it would be great if you could answer these specifically.

1- What was it like to be a peasant in the Middle Ages?
2- What was it like to live under a King?
3- Could a king do anything he pleased?
4- Did peasants have any rights?
5- What would it be like living in a feudal monarchy vs a democracy
6- What is the major difference between monarchy and democracy as far as a typical citizen is concerned?

Please explain monarchy in a few words and what life was like in the middle ages.

Thanks for helping me learn about the period.

Feudalism was a combination of share cropping and slavery. Notably, a big change began about 1347 with the arrival of the plague. So many died labor became a valuable commodity. Many peasants left their homes in search of lords who would pay a better wage for farming their fields. Laws were passed against this but they were difficult to enforce because of the manpower shortage.

Watch Braveheart. That ought to cover it.

TRJJ:

Monarchy was not a static concept nor was it limited to either Europe or to the Middle Ages. Likewise peasantry.

So do you want to discuss European models of monarchy only in the Middle Ages from 500 CE to 1500 CE? Or do you want to widen the scope geographically and temporally. Likewise do you want to limit the discussion of feudalism to just Western Europe or do you want to widen the geographical scope? Those choices will change the answers which you will get.

Cheers and be well.

The Middle Ages covers 1,000 years of history so, to start with, narrow down the when and where of what you’d like to know.

Please take some classes and do some research.

Not everything on the internet is trolling. It’s also weapons-grade laziness.

I don't see any functional difference in this case.

This could be interesting; its always fun to learn something new.

However, I object to your disingenuous approach here. You have just spent a week in Intros telling us you are a widely read expert on this.
...I found just as I had been misleading about early America, so I was about Democracy and the middle ages. Almost every book on the middle ages started with its author saying something along the lines of "Americans believe all kinds of myths and misportrayed about this period," and it is very accurate. Further, once you dig into sources, you will say, holy shi%, it was like that? Well, how did it get like this today? Do you mean you could do that, and the government did not control this? etc

I have no interest in proving you or anyone wrong, I only wish to reveal the truth, and people can do with it what they will. If you decide to debate one or more topics, don't even look at it as a fight but as a discussion.
Anyway, I'll keep my eye on it to see if it becomes interesting history. (Why did you put it in politics? Doesn't it go in History?)

The first doesn’t actually want your answers. The second absolutely wants them. Though it’s true that insincerity is an ingredient of both.

It sucked for everyone who wasn't nobility.

And even they had a bad time, what with "inheritance powder" and being maneuvered into executions.
Not to mention lead drinkware and arsenic wines.

As other have noted, to answer the other questions requires you to narrow your field. You are trying to get summaries of hundreds of years of history from multiple continents. This question however is key and can be answered in general.

The main difference is there are systems in place that allow the government to be changed which you can effect. There is no reason a monarchy wouldn't be able to theoretically recreate all the same systems we enjoy today as well or better. The issue always as that good monarchs are great, but there is nothing to stop or remove a bad monarch. There are other reasons too, like the fact that top down control has worse information about the needs of local issues. That's why I'm a libertarian socialist and support democratic confederalism. The more distributed and bottom up the systems of power are, the better.

Thanks so much for asking. Specifically, I am looking for around 700-1300 ad northwestern /feudal Europe.
