Federal report says U.S. impacts of climate change are intensifying

The Trump administration released a major report on climate change Friday, one that emphasizes the dire threat that human-caused global warming poses to the U.S. and its citizens.

"Earth’s climate is now changing faster than at any point in the history of modern civilization, primarily as a result of human activities." the report states.

The 1,500-page report details the climate and economic impacts U.S. residents will see if drastic action is not taken to address climate change.

"The impacts of global climate change are already being felt in the United States and are projected to intensify in the future," the report notes.

It also noted that climate change threatens the health and well-being of the American people by causing increasing extreme weather, changes to air quality, the spread of new diseases by insects and pests, and changes to the availability of food and water.

The report is officially called Volume II of the National Climate Assessment. As first mandated by Congress in the late 1980s, the assessment is prepared every four years by the nation's top scientists from 13 agencies. It's meant as a reference for the president, Congress and the public.

Volume I was released in 2017.

“Any remaining debate on the reality of climate change is over," said Lou Leonard of the World Wildlife Fund. "The Bush, Obama, and now Trump Administrations have all published reports showing the current and future impacts to the United States from climate change. Each report is increasingly dire."

Goes along with Volume I, released in 2017, which has zero refutations or rebuttals.

The evidence is overwhelming.

Trump will be dead soon. Why should he care about how hostile to life the world that he leaves behind is?

The way that the debate appears to be going is that there are two groups.

  • "Group A" seems to take the position that (and I'll paraphrase both sides here) "The extremes used to be -10 and +10 but now they are -15 and +15. This proves that there HAS been a change."

while

  • "Group B" seems to take the position that "When the extremes were -10 and +10 the average was 0 and not that they are -15 and +15 the average is 0. This proves that there HAS NOT been a change.".

One of those positions makes sense, and one of them doesn't.

Of course you have to understand what "increased fluctuation" and "change" actually mean before you can figure out which one is which one.

And for those supporters of his who might live a decade or two longer, fat chance we have of them doing anything. Odds are better to convince a gun nut to enact gun control. Oh, wait! Same crowd.

There is probably a line somewhere in there that says... "we cannot be 100% sure...." and no doubt Trump will seize on that. I can see it now .... "maybe the polar ice caps will melt and maybe they won't melt. Nobody knows for sure."

Trump's failure to fight climate change is a crime against humanity

President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Rick Scott, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, and others who oppose action to address human-induced climate change should be held accountable for climate crimes against humanity. They are the authors and agents of systematic policies that deny basic human rights to their own citizens and people around the world, including the rights to life, health, and property. These politicians have blood on their hands, and the death toll continues to rise.

Hmm...since we've known this since the 70's, it would not be unjust to hunt down the deniers and lock them all up, or worse.

The fossil fuels companies have also known about climate change and its negative effects for a long time. Their response have been to launch massive disinformation campaigns to delay the transition away from fossil fuels.

"It is difficult to imagine that executives, lobbyists, and scientists at major fossil companies were by this time unaware of the robust scientific evidence of the risks associated with the continued burning of their products.

Indeed, one of the key documents highlighted in the deception dossiers is a 1995 internal memo written by a team headed by a Mobil Corporation scientist and distributed to many major fossil fuel companies. The internal report warned unequivocally that burning the companies' products was causing climate change and that the relevant science "is well established and cannot be denied."

How did fossil fuel companies respond? They embarked on a series of campaigns to deliberately deceive the public about the reality of climate change and block any actions that might curb carbon emissions."

Sadly the fossil fuel companies still have a huge negative effect on our society. For example that the Trump administration wants to spend billions on dollars on propping up dirty coal plants.

Combating climate change could and should be a bipartisan issue. For, example that wind or solar are already the cheapest option in most Republican congressional districts.

While two thirds of Americans give priority to developing renewables over fossil fuel and also wanted US to stay in the Paris accord.

Most in US say alternative energy takes priority over fossil fuels

https://www.theatlantic.com/science...upport-staying-in-the-paris-agreement/528663/

Another example is Denmark with a right wing government that got 43 percent of their power from wind power in 2017 and plan to get half of all their energy needs met with renewables by 2030.

Before one of the resident wacky climate truthers comes along and whines that you didn't link directly to the report (despite the link being in the first paragraph of the article), here is the direct link:

Aren't they all going to be Raptured soon anyway?

From Chapter 2

"Over the last century, changes in solar output, volcanic emissions, and natural variability have only contributed marginally to the observed changes in climate (Figure 2.1).15 ,17 No natural cycles are found in the observational record that can explain the observed increases in the heat content of the atmosphere, the ocean, or the cryosphere since the industrial era.11 ,19 ,20 ,21 Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are the only factors that can account for the observed warming over the last century; there are no credible alternative human or natural explanations supported by the observational evidence.10 ,22"

It has been very profitable for the fossil fuel companies to delay the transition away from fossil fuels, by funding massive disinformation and lobbying campaigns for many decades.

There you even have Trump nominating a coal lobbyist as administrator of EPA.

That this have led to that it today will be very hard to avoid many of the devastating effects of climate change. Even if we have both a duty and opportunity to try to reduce those negative effects. For example that renewables are starting to outcompete fossil fuels.

https://eu.usatoday.com/story/money...ose-fossil-fuels-challenging-price/485210002/

This have led to that even American coal states like Indiana is abandoning coal for cheaper renewable energy.

That’s what makes the denial of the fools who consider themselves “free thinkers” so ironic. They are anything but.

Leftist liberals claim opponents of global warming propaganda are just disseminators of false information. How ironic that they would even recognize that not everything that is put forth as true is actually true.

I guess it would be OK to disbelieve the overwhelming consensus of scientists in good faith -- but that almost never happens. Climate change denial is, in practice, almost entirely driven by motivated reasoning, not hard thinking; it's people who don't want to believe in an existential threat because responding to it would hurt their bottom line and/or cause trouble for their ideology.

I posted the below in another thread but it's fitting here too:

In the wake of the climate report the Cult45 members tried to bury with a Friday night release. The roots of the depravity that is climate denial, with guidance from Mann and Toles -- and found an unexpected connection.

The book points to the story of Willie Soon, whose climate skepticism was subsidized by corporate interests -- he even described his articles as "deliverables" -- with much of his funding coming from a dark money conduit called DonorsTrust.
Deeper Ties to Corporate Cash for Doubtful Climate Researcher

So where else have we heard about DonorsTrust recently? They were the SOLE funder of the nonprofit that was Matthew Whitaker's only source of income before he joined the Trump administration. Tax returns reveal one six-figure donor accounts for entirety of “dark money” funding Whitaker’s nonprofit

So this is really all one story. There's a sort of Axis of Depravity, one of whose members has been appointed as Acting Attorney General. Weep for the planet.

Not sure what you're talking about, but can you refute these 2 reports?

I have found a lot of reputable scientific evidence, logic and reason on the internet to avoid accepting global warming claims without question.

So can you factually refute any of those 2 massive reports?

Hey...

You super informed, fully conscious folks don't have to wait on us slow poke skeptics. Just join in a worldwide kumbaya circle, sing nice peace songs, pull out your checkbooks and write a check for all your future discretionary income to an environmental group and then completely stop, cold turkey, using anything associated with fossil fuels...

Or capitalism for that matter.

Most of you folks say that you outnumber us mere good conservative folk, so your vast numbers would make quite the immediate impact.

Oh yeah, you don't really believe in your own nonsense or altruism, not that much. Has to be the state forcing us all into your dystopic ideas of utopia... or ultimately be eliminated.

Dehumanize us at the same time, herd us into those nice tranquillity camps for readjustment. Mental chiropractors that y'all are.

Do it Do it Do it...just make the jump. At least try.

Yano?

I let those educated on atmospheric science to debate the issue of global warming. I read the reports and form my own opinions. Those suggesting there is no reason for alarm about the weather have the best arguments.

A majority of the reports and those educated say AGW and CC are real and harmful.

:boohoo:~ So... It seems all the $$ spent on solar/wind/electric to lower Co2 have had little to no effect - we will still be crispy critters in 20-30 years. ´
