As an alliance of U.S.-backed militias advance against Islamic State in northern Syria, their political allies are making progress of their own toward a new federal system of government which they hope will take root in newly captured areas.
The autonomous federation being planned by Syrian Kurdish parties and their allies is taking shape fast: a constitution should be finalised in three months, and possibly sooner, to be followed quickly by elections, a Kurdish official said.

The plan had taken on even greater significance since the Syria Democratic Forces alliance, which is spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG militia, mounted a rapid new advance westwards this month into Islamic State's last foothold at the Turkish border.

The idea of newly-captured territory joining the "Democratic Federal System for Rojava - Northern Syria" was discussed last week with members of a local council set up to run the IS-held city of Manbij, a target of the campaign.

The Kurdish politicians at the heart of the effort say it will safeguard the rights of all ethnic groups, allowing communities to govern themselves and serving as a model for an eventual solution to the Syrian war.

But it has encountered broad opposition, including the United States, the Syrian government in Damascus, and the Syrian opposition to Assad.

The plan would not give Rojava complete sovereignty, they state they will remain part of Syria, but will be given federal autonomy. They even say they will fly the Syrian flag still but will also fly a newly designed federal flag. I do hope this move forwards, the values laid out in a possible constitution/agreement are values I think we can all uphold. One thing for sure is it sure as **** has the Turks nervous.

The partition of Syria is not a good thing. Some autonomy for the Kurds seems practical, but the US has no business in Syria. The US aims are always about pipelines, energy and the US Corporate Energy lobbyists. These Nations will have peace when the USA gets the hell out of the MidEast.

Right. Because the Middle East was soooooo peaceful before America showed up, right?

IT was MORE peaceful before the U.S. showed up.

Exactly. Syria (or any other country for that matter) would never accept an autonomous federation being run by somebody else.

The US is against this Federal plan... And Rojava would still remain part of Syria under this plan..

You imagine yourself cleverly sarcastic, but the reality was that the MidEast was reasonably stable before the US initiated Terror Wars. Just coincidentally, wars of all types are excellent marketing programs for the World's largest arms dealers, don't Ya' know?

There were only three wars where everybody was trying to kill everybody else instead of four. Wow. Color me impressed. Clearly the neighborhood has gone to the dogs.

Reasonably stable by whose standards?

Prior to 1948 you had French, English, Turkish, Italian, "Crusader" and Arab armies of all stripes running around. The further you go back the less "stable" the region seems.

The USA has delivered war to Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine, etc. 20 million dead since WWII. 40 Countries destabilized. I'd prefer we were the good guys, but we don't seem to be able to vote "to kill or not to kill."

The US hasn't "delivered war" to the Ukraine. That's the Russians, who are propping up a proxy force to keep Ukraine from looking westward.

Maybe, just maybe, if Saddam and his ilk had given up power peacefully and allowed the people of their countries to choose what form of government they wanted instead of terrorizing the populace into submission, their countries wouldn't be so bad off.

But nope. Dicatatorships always fight till the bitter end, killing as many and taking as much of the country with them as they go down.

What are the numbers of dead since Saddam was removed.
Made Iraq an Iranian client State
Expanded their sphere of influence.
So how many dead -Iraq and Syria?

Then that would only be 19,999,000 dead, give or take some number of thousands.

So your claiming that if Saddam and Assad and the like had peacefully stepped down instead of attacking their own populace en masse there'd still be thousands dead.

Interesting......

Certainly not. The US invasion of Iraq only caused about 4 million dead and a bunch of refugees. In Syria we've only caused hundreds of thousands dead, but we're not done yet in either Iraq or Syria. Funny, neither Iraqis nor Syrians likes us. Who'd a thunk it? Here we are doing these Syrians a big favor and at the same time not letting the ones that escape the death, destruction and chaos caused by our policies, come to the US for refuge. I mean you know we must be helping them out and the surviving ingrates still don't like us because we're killing their relatives. Killing is our specialty and pretty damn successful in Syria. Must be on a roll. Saddam had a successful and cosmopolitan country and women even taught in Universities, and with our help, now they are wearing veils and locked in closets. We've surely fixed that place. In Libya we got rid of all that social welfare like free housing, education, food, water, etc that Qaddafi organized and supplied and we've knocked their oil production down to a few hundred thousand barrels a day instead of 1.8 million barrels a day. We've surely fixed that place. Anyways, these OILY neighborhoods represent energy resources and the US is gonna control energy and economics as the lead hegemon in the NWO. I mean, get real, a bunch of Muslimaniacs can't be controlling our OIL under their dirt. Oh no, is there OIL in Iraq, Syria and Libya, probably just a coinky-dink.

You do realize we get the majority of our oil from ourselves, right? After that, we acquire it from the hostile and violent nation of, um , Canada.

Y'all need to come up with a new conspiracy theory.

Gaddafi(or however the hell you want to spell his name--- I've seen nine different variations I swear to God) and Saddam both set up societies were things were great--- as long as you were the right kind of Muslim. They also were able build to fancy beach resorts to drain gullible westerners of their hard credit, of course, but that hardly means that these places were good to live in.

3 competing ethic groups- The Sunni who maintained power thru use of terror over the other 2. Shia being the majority. How could they ever have a decent govt. Impossible, the hate goes back decade upon decade.
Iraq eventually split along sectarian lines.
1 reason Mosul is critical to the Shia and the Kurd's.

I read an article once comparing the Sunni death squads which have been operating since Saddam's fall to the KKK--- both are organizations composed of people who once had absolute power and are trying to retake it by terrorizing the uppity other groups.

No one is saying Saddam and Kadaffy were good people, but the US and European interventions made everything worse. ISIS was born, AQ increased their influence, and the whole region is now in chaos. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

How the **** do you spell the guy's name. This is actually starting to bother me lol

And true.

Gaddafi and Saddam were secularists. Assad is also secular and had his forces defending Christian villages against our Islamic extremist rebel "allies. The U.S. overthrew and is planning to overthrow all these leaders in order to install radical Islamic Extremists. You're shockingly ignorant on the issue.

TBH, I think at this point the people in Washington are doing it on purpose knowing full well what the consequences would be: the M.I.C. can't be profitable in a peaceful world.

I'm getting tired of repeating this over and over, but if you look at ISIS you'll notice that a lot of ex Mukhabaret guys occupy key positions in said organization.

The Mukhabaret were Saddam's secret police, in case you missed it.

Gaddafi sponsored dozens of terrorist groups, including a number of Islamic radical groups as well as the usual suspects.

The idea you seem to think the United States wants to install radical Islamists is laughable.

Saddam? Oh yea! That's the ally we supplied the poison gas precursors and satellite info to gin up a nice war against Iran. He must be a good guy. Our leaders wouldn't support a scumbag. Well, maybe only a few hundred because a nice dictatorial scumbag is a lot easier to negotiate with than some ragtag bunch of voters, don't ya' know? Arbenz. Pinochet. Somoza. Pahlavi. Mugabe. and maybe 30 or 40 other scumbag dictators on our close friends list.
