The drawbacks of smoking far out weigh the benefits of the nicotine.

Not if you don't develop the drawbacks.

I smoke, mostly, because I'm addicted but the mental stability it offers is a wonderful bonus to me.
Not that I'm off kilter or anything but it does make it easier for me to deal with trying and difficult situations.
It offers the benefit of situational focus, for me.

The odds are not in your favor.

What's the lung cancer percentage, 1 in 3? That means 2 in 3 don't get lung cancer.

If the casinos had those kinds of odds available, they'd be bust before you could say "HOLY CRAP DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE ODDS AT THE CASINO?!"

Just saying.

I think the cancer risks are 1 in 3 and if you have a hereditary risk of Alzheimer or Parkinson, it may be in your favor.

I do think nicotine has benefits it is just delivery system that has problems. Also the addictiveness of it is really problematic, I'm an X smoker but I'm not a smoking Nazi.

That is true.

I'm not saying smoking is good but sometimes it isn't bad.
People with former hard drug addictions and serious mental issues can benefit from smoking.

For me, I stay intensely mentally focused.
Sometimes good, sometimes bad but over all I rate the effect as good.

I was kind of forced into quitting even though I really do enjoy smoking. I need a heart transplant.

I wish I could, but I'm pretty sure I don't have the patience for it, and with my luck the scraps from my messy first tries would be discovered by my children.

It's pretty easy with the hand crank machines.
With some practice, you get quick at it.

Not to mention, that you don't have to run to the store every time you need a pack.

Yeah, and if you spend your life abusing alcohol, you end up killing off significant portions of your brain and shooting your liver full of holes.

So what?

I've seen some of those "benefits" beening dragged around by lifelong smokers, they are called oxygen tanks or the lovely wigs some get to wear while they go through chemo and radiation therapy. Great stuff.

Some, is not all.
Smoking isn't great for everyone but there is a lot of rabid exaggeration about smoking.

I sympaythise with the mental stability thing. its a good distraction for those of us with deep problems. I started smoking in a serious way about 3 years ago when I came down with bipolar disorder. I am very stable (not due to the smoking of course) but I am still slightly addicted.

You mean to tell me it's not legal to pick up Djarums in the states anymore?

No, it isn't. I like to smoke about half a pack a week at most, which I think is reasonable from a health point of view. I picked up several cartons a year ago before the ban went into effect, and they're about gone.

I tried.
I really don't get why they banned them, not a lot of people smoke them in the first place.

The bill was written by the American Big Tobacco companies. Supposedly it's to ban flavored cigarettes that appeal to kids, but of course not many kids smoke them. It doesn't ban menthols, which is what they'd do if they were really concerned about kids. It's essentially an anti-competition law banning imports.

Yep it does work.

I've noticed and maybe it's just coincidence but people with problems(worse than bipolar) seem to be more stable when they smoke, than those who don't.
