FDA warns against hand sanitizers that look like drinks - Reuters

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday warned of alcohol-based sanitizers being packaged and sold in containers that appear like food or drinks.

At a time when health agencies are pushing for better hand hygiene to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the United States, the top health regulator found many hand sanitizers look like beer cans, children’s food pouches, water bottles, juice bottles and vodka bottles.

As most legitimate U.S.-made hand sanitizers contain a whopping 60% alcohol, it does not take a degree in calculus to figure out the obvious attraction. In fact I understand that such products are not allowed in jails & prisons due to their potential for abuse.

Even more dangerous are the flood of such products from Mexico where the alcohol component can be toxic methanol. That can make you go blind and/or kill you.

Is it really 60%? I'd say that usually the alcohols used for these sorts of products isn't pure ethanol. I had always thought that it was either denatured in some way or used longer chain alcohols such that consuming the hand sanitizer was not going to be a good life choice.
