The underfunded FDA had to make deals with drug companies to justify its existence and finally settled on allowing them write their own prescriptions. Listing all the possible dangers and advising buyers to consult their own doctors seemed like a good compromise at the time, but it turned out to be a flurry of new drugs that where not adequately tested.
At one time it took 8 to 10 years for the FDA to fully test new new drugs, now it just takes months. Good for the drug companies. Not so good for the desperate people who want to know if they work or not.
