Heart of Iron series

That was a fun one. It reminded me I enjoy the whole Paradox series of games....Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Victoria
Mount and Blade is a fun quasi strategy game if you've never tried it.

Old school which I played a lot....Panzer General/Allied General Series.

Panzer General was cool, but I preferred the more in depth ones like the V For Victory series.

Paradox has some great grand strategy games, I have spent hours and hours on their games.. especially Europa Universalis, I tried Pride of Nations recently, it was good but had a lot of kinks to work out, so I put it aside until it got patched, and then forgot about it. I tried Mount and Blade, but never got anywhere past the very beginning of the game after getting frustrated trying to hit targets while mounted.

I just reinstalled Total War: Shogun2 and have spent quite a few hours in the last week playing it.. probably going to finish up the few remaining "earn an income" tasks I have today and will be fire it up again shortly.. I have a bit of unfinished business avenging the defeat of my vassal (well I let him get conquered intentionally.. I do not need him to buffer my front now and I want his resources for my own).

I am blanking on other games atm, I do love the Civ games (well most of them), Galactic Civilizations was cool, Sins of a Solar Empire, and I am sure there are a lot more to add to the list, but not coming to mind.

edit: ohh I have capitalism II on my machine as well, such cheesy dated graphics, but a unique and fun strategy game. I always wished for Capitalism III to come out, yet it never emerged.

edit 2 to add one I just saw in my game collection that I enjoy: Knights of Honor

Those are fantastic games! I completely forgot about those 2.

It is outdated but I still play it as well. The game is timeless.

Shogun 2 to me is the best yet in the Total War series. I love the art and feel of the game. I thought Empire was too slow and the ship combat wasn't very fun. There also wasn't much difference in the nations in the game besides starting area.

I'll always love the Europa Universalis series. I've also played hours and hours on it. I love the game. The depth, the sweep, they have a perfect blend of complexity and simplification for such a broad game. I also love the fact that every game feels epic taking a country from the middle ages up to pre-industrialization.

Civilization is the gold-standard for turn-based strategy. I never got into Civ 3 and never tried 4 or 5, but I'm obsessive about FreeCiv. For the most part, though, I prefer games with more social interaction-- games where the bulk of actual play is talking to the other players. Difficult to get that out of computer games.

So my favorite strategy game is actually Diplomacy, but since Wake's thread about Mafia I am warming up to it considerably.

I am assuming you are referring to the tabletop version of Diplomacy?

I've only played online, but you still have to talk to the other players.

I have not played diplomacy in ages, and I have not tried playing online, I am used to the old tabletop version with people running off to other rooms, or grabbing a beer and heading outside for negotiations. fun times!

This also brings back memories of other bookcase games and long nights sometimes stretching into mornings playing them. Britannia is one that stands out, I loved that game.

There was another similar to Britannia set in Japan..I forget the name though. Come to think of it there were many long forgotten gems that we played, most a dim memory since it has been 25 years or so.

I do not have enough friends that are nerdy enough to make a decent group, but I would love to revisit some of these old games. or better yet I would love to see them remade into computer versions (preferably playing with a group online, not solo versus a computer though)

We used to have a group of people over to the appartment and play it on the table, much fun. I think out of 30 or so games, I won once.

Not sure how I forgot them, but the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series.

Also note that the new Jagged Alliance game was released today(to slightly positive reviews so far according to metacritic) and the demo was released a week ago and is available on Steam. I just got the download complete message for it as I typed this.

Wow someone who played those too! Those were a couple of my all time favorites but seem to be unknowns by mainstream, particularly P.T.O. II. I spent hundreds of hours beating them over and over. My favorite of the Romance series was IV. Why cant they make more games like that these days?

Because for the most part the strategy genre has basically been abandoned by most game developers. I would assume it is because it is a niche market that does not pay off with immense sales. Further complicating the niche market aspect of it is the apparent difficulty to launch a polished product upon release. Due to the complexity of many of the games it is a monstrous undertaking to play test, and balance the game. Many times I have seen great strategy games released that are a gem in the rough, with balance issues, quirks and exploits. This is in part I imagine to the limited budgets and staff these games have (since it is not a high return), and an inability for limited beta testing to cover the immense amount of ground that would be necessary to discover many of them.

So basically strategy games are high risk endeavor, often with limited reward and as such are not a compellingly safe business choice for many companies.

It seems there is but one developer/publisher anymore that focuses on this genre, Paradox Interactive.

My favorite RPG is FF7. I liked all the Final Fantasies up until FFX. It started getting fruity with all the singing and dancing routines. I also liked Mario RPG for SNES.

My favorite strategy game is currently Company of Heroes. It's a WWII simulator and the most realistic I've played. If your computer is capable of running high-end games, you have to get it. It's like $10 on STEAM. The online play is awesome.

I also like the Warcraft, Starcraft, and Age of Empires series. Oh, and I remember playing the original Civilization on floppy disks as a young boy. Fond memories.

Wake, how do you like Sins of a Solar Empire? For the most part I love the gameplay and it's relatively challenging and fun at the same time. However, I hate that increasing fleet capacity results in a drag on your overall economy, i think that's stupid.

I'm a newbie at HoI3 (the original, not Semper Fi or For the Rodina). I'm playing 3 saved games (Germany, the Soviet Union, and Brazil) at my leisure time spent at the computer, which is about 30 minutes a day at most.
Care to offer some tips?
Oh, and I made a similar thread about RTS games, but since your thread seems to be more larger and having more participation, I guess I'll just jump ship to your thread.
I could offer some tips for Starcraft though
