I'm wondering what are everybody's favorite philosophers. I personally admire Bertrand Russell, John Locke, Rosseau and Voltaire.

Pythagoras, Parmenides, Plato, Plotinus, The Alexandrian and Cappadocian Fathers, Eruigena, the School of Chartres and Meister Eckhart.

It is a long list, but I simply cannot cut it down any further.;)

i remember such a thread ,nietzsche ,plato ,rousseau, confucius ,

Why is that?

Fred Reed makes more sense than anyone I know. Some people may not like him because he moved to Mexico, but that makes sense too. In fact, it has contributed to Fred's insight.

i have to say that my greatest favorite philosopher is myself  ,when i was a child ,i used to think the moon was a god..

Noam Chomsky
John Dewey
Socrates
Marx
Engels
Herbert Marcuse
Christopher Hitchens
Leon Trotksy
Emma Goldman

Why Socrates among all those others?

In the Republic he emphasizes the idea of prospering for the community.
Using dialectic and the Socratic method
Also because he is pretty much the founder of idealism.

Marx...Groucho that is.

Peter Singer, Bertrand Russell, Schopenhauer, A.C. Grayling (only a little) and, of course, Mr. Nietzsche.

Some others that could be considered philosophers but really aren't: Christopher Hitchens, Victor Stenger, P.Z. Myers, and Lawrence Krauss.

I forgot to add Christopher Hitchens. My bad.

My favorite philosopher is Sivashanmugam who explicated the theory of expected knowledge!!

Shakespeare, John Milton, Sun Tzu, Napoleon Bonaparte...Mostly writers and Generals.

Woody Allen

Plato, especially his man in a cave philosophy. That argument still holds ground today in modern philosophy.

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
Who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table.

David Hume could out-consume
Schopenhauer and Hegel,

And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.

There's nothing Nietzche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist.
Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed.

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.

Plato, they say, could stick it away--
Half a crate of whiskey every day.

Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle.
Hobbes was fond of his dram,

And Ren Descartes was a drunken fart.
'I drink, therefore I am.'

Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed,
A lovely little thinker,
But a bugger when he's pissed.
