Favorite Animes

Are there any new robot or space opera animes that came out lately?

Define recently.

Some giant fighting robot anime from the last few years:

ALDNOAH.ZERO - Watch on Crunchyroll <~first half is really, really good, second half is not bad. Some pretty cool CGI mechs. Epic feel to it.

Planet With - Watch on Crunchyroll <~kinda outthere story, but interesting

SSSS.GRIDMAN - Watch on Crunchyroll <~I have not watched it, but alot of people seem to think it is pretty good

https://www.netflix.com/title/80150290 <~probably the best on the list, it is the most recent Gundum series, but you do not need familiarity with Gundum to watch.

And it is time for my review of the new season:

Somali and the Forest Spirit: Gorgeous painted backgrounds, super cute girl, and a fascinating world. What is not to like.

Asteroid in Love: Yuri + astronomy + cute girls doing cute things. I did not make it past episode 2, but it is not bad, just I have limited time and there is better stuff

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!: Holy hell this is awesome! Almost certainly going to be the series of the season. 3 girls in some odd city form an anime club at school. That sentence gives you entirely the wrong idea about the show. This show is about animation, not cute girls. Unique character designs and art style, incredibly fun animation sequences, and characters that are interesting. Big win! Here is the imagination of the girls at work:

Seton Academy: Welcome to the Pack: harem comedy featuring animal girls and mild fanservice. The word that springs to mind to describe it is "meh".

Nekopara: based on an eroge about catgirls. Fanservice is turned down, but still there. The catgirls are still too young for the fanservice to be anything other than disturbing. I am taking a pass on this one.

Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It: This has it's moments. It is nice to have a series featuring actual adult characters. Series starts with a female scientist telling her male counterpart that she thinks she is in love with him. They then set out to prove it scientifically. Just enough of the jokes work to keep me interested.

A Certain Scientific Railgun T: It is Railgun. Watch it. If you have not watched the first 2 series, watch them too. 'Nuff said.

Oda Cinnamon Nobunaga: Oda Nobunaga gets reincarnated into modern Japan as a dog. The joke got old fast.

Interspecies Reviewers: The big fanservice series of the season, 2 guys and a hermaphrodite angel in a fantasy world write reviews on prostitutes. Kinda meh, kinda alright. The author of the original manga seems to have a fetish for oversized boobs. Take it for what it is.

In/Spectre: urban fantasy about a girl who solves disputes between supernatural entities. At times really good, at times kinda mundane. I hate the washed out look to the whole thing.

My Hero Academia Season 4(cont): Season 4 is continuing, and it is still great.

dumb but endearing

For some reason which I cannot fully articulate, I really liked Hare+Guu. Of course I watched it when I was young and confused.

Teenagers in space? Ugh, no thanks. :doh

Watched Aldnoah already. Not bad at all.

Planet With... Jesus, seems too crazy for me, I'll pass.

Gridman- possible, but too super-roboty for now.

I guess it'll be the newest Gundam series then. Thanks for the heads up.

Kinda hard to get worked up about it. The show was just terrible. The first episode was weak, and it was far and away the best episode. Plus, Funi is a private company. They can decide what to stream and not at their choice. The 4chan types are up in arms, but what else is new.

Just caught the second season of One Punch Man. Hilarious show.

It’s about a guy who decides to become a super hero for fun. So he does a relatively moderate amount of exercise, causing his hair to fall out, and becomes the most powerful guy in the universe. He’s able to kill anything with one punch.

Just announced, Uzaki-chan is getting an anime for the summer season. Manga is pretty good, so looking forward to it.

Early favorite for best anime of the new season: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom!

Just tons of fun, and a nicely novel take on iseki anime.

Time for the Spring 2020 season preview things, but first...Hi Score Girl season 2 is now out on Netflix. Really good stuff, especially if you are old enough to remember the 90s arcade games.

Now, onto the Spring 2020 season:

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom!: 10 year old girl of a noble family in a medieval type world falls and hits her head. When she comes to, she remembers being a 17 year old in modern Tokyo, and that she is now inside an otome game that her modern self loved to play. Worse, she is in the role of the antagonist, who in every route of the game was either killed or banished. So now she sets out to change the game ending. Hilarious at times, and interesting always.

Tamayomi: The Baseball Girls: This is a classic styles cute girls do cute things anime. In this case, they play baseball. Has a very good grasp on the inherent attractiveness of girls playing sports, and conveys it well without ever being trashy of even overtly fanservicey. I am enjoying it.

Kakushigoto: based on a manga by the guy who did Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei! Based on that fact, I expected big things, and it delivers. Story is about a guy who draws an ecchi manga and does not want his young daughter to know what he does. It is nonstop jokes, puns, sigh gags, misunderstandings and slapstick. About 90 % of the jokes either fall flat or don't translate to English. Despite that, it is funnier and flat out better than pretty much anything else out this season.

Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater: Cute girls do cute things. This time fishing. Art is soso, story is soso, character designs soso. Very meh.

The Millionaire Detective - Balance: Unlimited: Ultra rich guy joins the police, smashes stuff up, then writes checks to make it all good. Only watched the first episode so far, if it does not improve rapidly, I will drop it.

Food Wars, Season 5: Why is there more Food Wars when the logical end point was the last episode of last season? Actually, as I read the manga, I see where it is going, and the last volume was actually pretty good, but this still seems tacked on as a way to make easy money off the franchise.

as is tradition also things seem to be picking up a bit in ascendance of a book worm so that is nice

Mirai is now streaming on Netflix. Well worth checking out, really fun movie with great art. Story is about a 4 year old boy who gets a baby sister. Like most 4 year olds, he does not handle it well.

New season of Re: Zero has started. Very intense first episode.
