Father sues McDonald's over 'advertising' of Happy Meals

A Quebec father has launched a class-action lawsuit against McDonald's, alleging the company's Happy Meals break strict provincial laws against advertising to children.

Since its debut in 1979, the Happy Meal has been a staple of McDonald's menu and a go-to meal option on family road trips.

But some Canadian parents are decidedly unhappy about the hold the fast-food empire has over their children's stomachs.

Antonio Bramante is the lead plaintiff in a newly certified lawsuit that alleges McDonald's is unlawfully aiming advertising at children under 13 years of age.

That would violate the province's strict youth consumer protection laws.

COMMENT:-

What a really stupid law suit. McDonald's is an American company and operates under American law. Who cares what a bunch of socialist French people want?

Besides, McDonald's says that it doesn't "aim its advertising" and children, only at adults. If children get exposed to it why that's only "collateral advertising" and McDonald's can't be held responsible for irresponsible parents who allow their children to look at advertising that they aren't supposed to look at.

Right?

Besides, under the so-called "Language Law" of Quebec, "McDonald's" should be operating under the name "Propriété du fils du grand chef" and not that obviously culturally genocidal "McDonald's".

Does it make me a bad person that I care very little about what happens in Quebec? I mean, obviously I want everyone to enjoy the same quality of life the rest of the country has, but this kind of petty "Quebec ****"... I mean, I try to get worked up, but I can barely squeeze out a tabernac.

You can’t advertise to children in Quebec? So no toy commercials?

Who knows...they talk funny and seem angry all the time. I sneak across the provincial border, buy my cheap beer, and run back again as quickly as possible....hehe

I agree it's a silly lawsuit, but it doesn't matter if Mcd's is an american company. If they operate in Canada then they have to follow the laws just as you'd have to if you visited Canada. If they have a law that you can't advertise at kids, and Mcd's is advertising at kids in that province then they are breaking the law. I know nothing about it, but the defense that they are an american company has nothing to do with it as far as I can tell.

Crazy Canadians. How else can you get someone hooked on Molson if not for advertising to kids?

Do you ever post OP comments that aren't blatant sarcasm?

Just curious...

Or it would be if I still drank....:lamo

Not knowing all the details, I'd just say that if McD's is not complying with their advertising laws, they need to cease and desist in that province. And if they dont want to remain in that province, leave.

I'm sure it's still more profitable for them to change the ads and remain...but it's still their decision.

It's interesting. There's a lot of advertising that is aimed at children. But in the end, I always thought that the parents could just say "no".

Sir,

Do NOT make disparaging remarks about one of America's biggest beer companies (and soon to get much bigger once they finish wiping out Pabst).

Remember, the founder of Molson's got his start with the money he earned through his daring nautical feats.

PS - It is considered as impolite to mention that those "daring nautical feats" actually involved smuggling booze into the US as it is to mention that Faneuil Hall was built with the proceeds of the slave trade - so DON'T do it.

PPS - Moosehead is owned by A. Keith & Co. a UK firm.

It seems like any American company is going to be in trouble in Quebec, because Quebecers are decidedly against anything that isn't inherently French or French-Canadian. That's hard baked into their history.
So why is McDonald's so insistent on penetrating a hostile market to begin with?

I cannot imagine that there's much payoff.

Well what the UK lacks in cooking skills they somewhat make up for in brewing skills. Prolly all the demand from Ireland? ;)

More liberalism run amok. Any child that would want a happy meal can't get to McDonalds to even buy one unless their parents take them.
