(CNN) A Seattle woman rinsed her sinuses with tap water. A year later, she died of a brain-eating amoeba.

The 69-year-old, whose name was not given, had a lingering sinus infection. For a month, she tried to get rid of it using a neti pot with tap water instead of using sterile water, as is recommended.

Neti pots are used to pour saline into one nostril and out of the other to irrigate the sinuses, usually to fight allergies or infections.
The brain-eating amoeba is called Balamuthia mandrillaris is found in lakes & ponds of fresh water. It lives mainly in the bottom sediments. If you swim in such a body of water, use a nose clip to minimize your chance of infection. In this case it was found in her tap water but the actual source of the amoeba is not clear from the abstract.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balamuthia_mandrillaris.
Lesson: Dont get lazy and not use the salt that comes with the pot, it is there for a reason!
Old-fashioned remedy: pot of freshly boiled water, a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil or some vapor rub in hot water, head over pot, cover the whole shebang with bath towel and "enjoy" for about 10 minutes.
Or use fluoridated city water.
Or use distilled water if you're going to shoot it up your nose. That's a lot easier than dying from having your brain eaten by a microscopic big.
