Ex-Rep. Barr Quits GOP for Libertarians (1 Viewer)

I think he's always had strong libertarian leanings; I actually wondered if he'd jump ship when he joined the ACLU a couple years ago.

Still, it's a little surprising that he actually joined the LP, given his history as a "drug warrior."

Barr is from my state and I can say for sure that he is nor ever was a republican.

You should read some of his BS he writes for the local liberal newspaper. After many people here in this strong red state (one of the few that elected more republicans last election because of the great job they can done after the democrats like Carter ran this state into the ground) saw Barr for what he is and we kicked his *** out of the party.

He can say all he wants that he left the party but the people spoke 6 years ago when we threw the bum out.

Yay, LP! The only small government party left in this country.

Would be nice if the entire of body of libertarian Republicans would leave it to its increasingly liberal leadership and join the LP. It's time the LP was a major party.

The LP is a little too extreme to ever be a major party. They care more about ideological purity than they do about winning elections. A better alternative would be for libertarians to organize into a PAC and endorse the best candidate with a reasonable chance of winning. If the AARP, NEA, NRA, and NAACP can influence policy as much as they do, there's no reason that a libertarian PAC couldn't be successful as well.

The phrase, rats leaving a sinking ship, comes to mind.

One ex-congressman, defeated in his race years ago, changing his party status =/= "rats leaving a sinking ship."

When lieberman chose to run as an independent and beat the democrats, does that count as "rats leaving a sinking ship?" When Jeffords did the same, was it such a big deal?

It's just his way of gaining a little publicity and positioning himself to make some more $$ by getting involved in pac's.

Or maybe he realizes that the GOP is no longer Conservative, but Neoliberal. There are not a lot of Conservatives these days who want to be Bushneviks. At least, not a lot of REAL Conservatives.
