It is a common misconception that requiring an ID to vote will suppress minority vote. Evidence shows that not to be true.

'Suppression,' Debunked: Study Concludes Voter ID Laws Do Not Depress Voter Turnout

When Georgia became one of the first states in the nation to demand a photo ID at the ballot box, both sides served up dire predictions. Opponents labeled it a Jim Crow-era tactic that would suppress the minority vote...Turnout among black and Hispanic voters increased from 2006 to 2010, dramatically outpacing population growth for those groups over the same period...“I think the rhetoric on both sides has been overstated,” said Edward Foley, executive director of an election law center at The Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law. “It hasn’t had the voter-suppressing effect that some people feared,” Foley said.

Town Hall. Ha ha.

Imagine the level of bigotry it takes to assume minorities can't get a valid ID.

Town Hall. Ha ha.

They are citing National Bureau of Economic Research Working Paper No. 25522:

U.S. states increasingly require identification to vote – an ostensive attempt to deter fraud that prompts complaints of selective disenfranchisement. Using a difference-in-differences design on a 1.6-billion-observations panel dataset, 2008–2018, we find that the laws have no negative effect on registration or turnout, overall or for any group defined by race, gender, age, or party affiliation. These results hold through a large number of specifications and cannot be attributed to voters’ reaction against the laws, measured by campaign contributions and self-reported political engagement. However, the likelihood that non-white voters were contacted by a campaign increases by 5.4 percentage points, suggesting that parties’ mobilization might have offset modest effects of the laws on the participation of ethnic minorities. Finally, strict ID requirements have no effect on fraud – actual or perceived...

While it's interesting (but not surprising, as partisan sources are, well, partisan) that Townhall left off that last point that ID Requirements have no more effect on fraud than they do on suppressing minority voters, the fact that everyone's ox got gored seems to suggest that it in and of itself, at least, isn't partisanly motivated. Finally, they end with:

Overall, our findings suggest that efforts to improve elections may be better directed at other reforms.

Since any more you need a valid ID to do even the simple things, this has be a stupid argument for years.

It is out and racist and stupid to think black people dont have or can get a valid ID.

There should be no requirements to vote beyond those needed to administer a fair and accurate vote. You have failed to demonstrate how a voter id does this.

Imagine the level of bigotry it takes to assume minorities can't get a valid ID.

Imagine the hubris it takes to add obstacles to voting.

...republican-radio-level cheerleaders and parrots would have us believe their stinking crooked party is cleaner than the democrats.... :lamo

How Republicans Tried to Rig an Election in North Carolina (And Almost Got Away With It) | GQ

"..It is of course revealing that the Republican Party, whose president floated the baseless allegation that between three and five million people voted illegally in an election he won, is responsible for an actual, documented case of stealing votes. But calling Dowless’s operation “voter fraud” isn’t really accurate, because that term refers to the alleged attempts of voters to swing an election result: casting ballots where they don’t live, for example, or impersonating someone else at the ballot box. Here, voters were the victims of a partisan plot to further rig an already rigged system. This is a fraud on the entire democratic process, and those responsible very nearly got away with it..."

Really------------------------explain to us how the hell it is an obstacle when virtually EVERYONE has a valid ID. Is it too damned hard to reach into your back pocket and get out your wallet????????????

Conservatives LOVE BIGGER MORE INTRUSIVE GOVERNMENT !!!

ALEC is directly tied to the emerging trend among state legislatures to consider voter ID laws.

Using false allegations of “voter fraud,” right-wing politicians are pursuing policies that disenfranchise students and other at-risk voters — including the elderly and the poor — who are unlikely to have drivers’ licenses or other forms of photo ID.

By suppressing the vote of such groups, ALEC’s model “Voter ID Act” grants an electoral advantage to Republicans while undermining the right to vote. In addition, ALEC wants to make it easier for corporations to participate in the political process.

Their Public Safety and Elections taskforce is co-chaired by Sean Parnell of the Center for Competitive Politics, one of the most vociferous pro-corporate election groups, and promotes model legislation that would devastate campaign finance reform and allow for greater corporate influence in elections

Sorry to say the grand ole party that represented the Fiscal Conservative/Socially Responsible republicans is dead.

Over thrown by a radical right wing Libertarian coup over the past 39 years led by Charles Koch $$$$$ which represents hate and outlaws.

Once again….Voters BEGIN ORGANIZING YOUR VOTING DAY PACKET. Keep it close by ALWAYS.

Make sure a birth certificate is readily available which can be replaced through the county seat one was born …..It may take about 3 weeks.

WHEN LARGE LARGE NUMBERS OF MODERATE VOTERS GO TO THE POLLS AMERICA ALWAYS BECOMES A BETTER PLACE.

How long have people in this country been voting without an ID? How many case of in person voting fraud have there been?

Experts: Someone is more likely to get struck by lightning than to commit voter fraud

“Mail ballots are paper ballots. That means we do have an opportunity to audit all of those ballots,” said Nordon. “But I think people should feel very comfortable with the security of the system.”

As for security, election officials take extra measures to ensure the integrity of the ballot. Firstly, mail-in voting reduces the risk of foreign interference to nearly zero. Mail-in ballots are printed on a specific type of paper with technical markings that are difficult to duplicate.

They also include several local elections like city council, school boards, and ballot initiatives. It means there are thousands of different ballots for our country’s 3,000 counties.

Then you consider the actual ballot itself.

It comes in a secrecy envelope that is connected to each individual voter who needs to sign it. That signature is verified by judges who are sometimes trained by the FBI to detect inconsistencies.

Counties across the country also have system in place that update voter registration, death records, and address changes daily while they go in and cross-reference the data as well to make sure the ballots are going where they are supposed to and people are who they say they are.

Thanks for posting this.. There is a lot of ignorance of this process being exploited by opponents. It’s also important to note this is a highly distributed process with unique ballots for most precincts.
