The 10th edition of the Global Corruption Barometer (GCB) for Africa reveals that while most people in Africa feel corruption increased in their country, many also feel optimistic that they, as citizens, can make a difference.

Corruption in African countries is hindering economic, political and social development. It is a major barrier to economic growth, good governance and basic freedoms, such as freedom of speech or citizens’ right to hold governments to account.

Let’s look at one example: the Congo.

When the Belgians left, less than a dozen native Congolese had college degrees and there were zero institutions of higher learning in the entire country. How long do you think it takes to make up for something like that?

Do you think an entire educational base can be built by a country with basically no resources in 60 years?

And why did they have no institutions of higher learning? Because the Belgians didn’t want educated Congolese. They just wanted rubber, uranium, and other raw materials extracted at the cheapest price possible.
