Daily coronavirus deaths in Europe could reach four or five times their April peak within months without effective countermeasures, the World Health Organization has said, as nine more countries reported record numbers of new infections. Dr Hans Kluge, the WHO’s regional director for Europe, said on Thursday that Europe had recorded its highest weekly number of new Covid-19 cases as the virus again spread rapidly across the continent. “The evolving epidemiological situation in Europe raises great concern: daily cases are up, hospital admissions are up and Covid is now the fifth leading cause of deaths” in the region, killing more than 1,000 people a day, he said.

So, it can get worse before it gets better. What can a person do? I will wear my mask whenever venturing out. Upon returning home I will wash my hands. And finally, unless a trip outdoors is vital, I will be at home. This coming winter will be a time for hibernation.

Great day to live in Sweden huh?

Sweden performed worse than the average EU country, so no, not really.

I do however enjoy watching a hardcore right fascist claim we should be more like Sweden while supporting a president that didn't want to do anything like Sweden.

Wait, how's this possible? Donald Trump isn't in charge there, is he?!?!

I believe many people in the big cities are not taking the risk as seriously as they should. It has to be admitted that the young adults find it hard to quit their social lives with friends.

I don't believe you. This can't be happening in Europe, because Trump is not there causing it. Complete fantasy.

Stockpile shelf-stable food and supplies and avoid going out unless life or death if you live in an urban area. One good thing is that your country's deaths to infection rate is sort of okay compared to many of your european neighbors so you are likely to get better care than they are getting.

Nope. Look at Belgium.

I know you're barely literate but I said Sweden did worse than the average EU country which is absolutely true. Compare Sweden to all of its neighbors, Finland, Norway and Denmark.

Big fan of Sweden and its policies are you?

Cherry pick for the win, eh? Herp derp. Keep being you.

I thought everyone in Europe complied to wearing a mask?

Cherry pick? You guys keep holding up Sweden as your shining model of success, and I pointed out that they performed worse than the average European country, you then tried to cherry pick Belgium. How exactly am I cherry picking by pointing out Sweden did not do well in this pandemic compared to the average European country?

Try something more than one of your lazy one-liners. Explain how you'd like us to be like Sweden and why.

Literally nobody has ever claimed that. Europe did tend to wear masks more than the US and take it more seriously, and consequently did a lot better than we did both in infection rates and deaths per capita.

Most responsible folk did which is why our rates of infection dropped so quickly. Premature reopening of bars, clubs, restaurants, schools and colleges has been the single most stupid thing our government has done, so far. And now we have a winter to deal with-the virus' favourite season. We were doing ok until Johnson screwed up.

How much longer do you think that they should have stayed shut down, roughly?

Johnson's probably worried about this: Coronavirus: UK worst hit among major economies.

Hard to say, though.

Most of Sweden's deaths were from the elderly in care homes, but now its flattened. Belgium did a shutdown, yet their deaths per capita are much higher, so it shows shutdowns arent guaranteed.

And now the rest of Europe is experiencing a 2nd wave of covid attacks and will have to shutdown again, while Sweden has not.

If kids miss a year off school it isn't the end of the world and they can soon catch up; likewise universities and colleges. With businesses struggling to stay afloat it's obviously a real problem and I completely understand the desire to get the economy up and running again. But if reopening is producing negative health outcomes which in turn reflect back on business (more people sick, fewer workers), I stringent severe lockdown restrictions must be put in place again, as is happening in several regions in England now. People have also become complacent; bored with the pandemic and lax in their vigilance.

Check what's happening in Sweden.

No, I want it shut down to keep people alive so they can contribute to the economy.

Johnson learned a valuable lesson from the last shutdown that he is now deploying--creating a "support bubble" so folks can still go visit with their side-piece during the shutdown without having to resign their position.
