The European Union seeks to send an observer delegation to the upcoming *********** Authority but the ******* government is withholding visas. In past years, the EU has “consistently supported and funded the work of the Central Elections Commission in order to prepare for holding credible, inclusive and transparent elections for all ************."

European Union flags flutter outside the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, March 24, 2021

Elections have not been held since 2006 which has been a criticism suggesting a lack of democracy so it is important that such elections are seen to be above board. It is increasingly difficult for the European Union to be on the ground and overlooking the process.

You censored the words “Israel” and “Palestinian”?

Why?

No comment. Move the thread to a more appropriate forum and I'll have plenty to say about this.

Cheers and be well.

It's about the European Union in Brussels so the Europe forum is the right place for this topic. What other forum do you suggest?

@Jean-s

Given that the I&P issues will be a part of discussion, then it would seem that the I/P subforum would be better for frank and unencrypted debate on this issue. Rules are rules at DP, even if they seem inane ones to some like you and me perhaps.

Cheers and be well.

I cannot agree that any time certain parts of the Middle East are under discussion at the heart of the European Union in Brussels, the topic has to be moved out of Europe, Evilroddy. The European observers of the election is fundamentally an EU topic. Belgium where the EU Commission sits is not in the West Bank. I was able to express my opinion regarding the limitation on options open to the European Union without violating the rule. Deliberations of the EU Commission certainly belong more fittingly in the Europe forum than anywhere else. I wrote to RedAkston precisely regarding this type of eventuality when the new rule was brought into place. I live in the European Union.

Can't the observers go through Jordan?

Jean-s:

Where will the observers do their observing and which state is blocking the observers and is in military control of those territories since 1967? No need to answer, it's a rhetorical question. Since the observers will be observing in the Middle East on territory militarily occupied by a Middle-Eastern state which shall not be named, a case can be made that this is a Levant-based topic and not solely a EU matter. I agree, it's absurd but it is an absurdity which neither of us can control nor change. C'est la vie.

You've had your say and you summed up the problem nicely for washunut who made post #8.

Please see post #9. The European Union cannot send observers because the territory is occupied and the occupation country is refusing visas.
