EU realpolitik on Ukraine - too little, too late

Sarkozy and Merkel have tacitly accepted the illegal Russian annexation of Crimea.

Sarkozy and Merkel have also accepted the Russian demand that mainland Ukraine be partitioned (DNR/LNR statelets).

I'm beginning to believe the Brexit folks have it right. The EU deserves neither allegiance nor fidelity.

I'm beginning to believe the Brexit folks have it right. The EU deserves neither allegiance nor fidelity.

The Europeans and in particular Germans have handled the Ukraine situation since it asked for membership in Nato in a way that strains belief. Anyone that trusts the EU without overwhelming power on his own side is absolutely mad. But what's new? Ask the Greeks. Ask the Turks.

What else could they really have done? Putin's not pulling out of the Crimea, and the Russian part of the Ukraine isn't likely to shut up and go away anytime soon.

Short of trying to declare war, or shooting themselves in the chest to shoot Russia in the arm, I don't see what they could shave done at this point.

Sarkozy and Merkel courted Ukraine and enticed Kyiv to reject Putin's Eurasian Economic Union in favor of the EU.

If they were not prepared to stand by their handmaiden, they should never have proposed a marriage.

Sarkozy and Merkel certainty would not accept Moscow tearing off and consuming a chunk of their respective countries.

Politicians trying to lure a country into their own sphere of influence then backing down when the giant neighboring country says "nyet".

Not exactly a suprise----Western Europe more or less thinks of Eastern Europe as a meat shield in case of war with Russia. If it's too hard to set things up, their not going out of their way to help out.

It backfired, so their not going to risk a war or getting hurt economically to aid a country which has essentially been mauled.
