European Parliament President Martin Schulz urged the European Union on Tuesday not to underestimate the current threat to the 28-member bloc.
The trust of many people in "entire institutions, whether national or European," was lost, Schulz told the German daily "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (FAZ). Schulz said there was the risk of an "implosion of the EU," partly due to Euroskeptic movements within EU member states,

"If the British leave the EU, there will be demands for further escape referendums," the German Social Democrat politician said, referring to the UK's upcoming "Brexit" referendum in June.
While admitting that Euroskeptics remained in the minority, Schulz said the silent majority was taken in by the notion that in the end everything would be fine. The negative outcome of last week's Dutch referendum on the Association Agreement with Ukraine showed that this was a fallacy that wasn't to be relied upon, he added.

"In Europe, we are on a slippery path," the EU president said, accusing EU leaders of showing too little commitment to the European idea.
"Hardly any of the governments are really fighting to reach the hearts of the people," he added, urging them to counter the "easy answers" of EU skeptics with a clear commitment to the bloc.

THese EU elite jokers are finally waking up!

Bout time.

We see this so often in the world now, a failure to understand risk. And a failure to understand that the people still have the vote.

Martin Schulz is one of the pushy hypocrite populists that is at the heart of the EU problem and its loss of legitimacy. Their lobby has been telling the populations that all the EU guaranteed prosperity and peace and free movement and all good things. But they did not explain the cost side of say the Euro. They did not shift the sovereignties from Berlin to Brussels that would have been necessary to establish free movement and instead played smoke and mirrors by installing Schengen and the Dublin Treaties. They were not willing to spend the money on weapons and military capability that peace required.

Recently these systems have had to face reality. And one after the other they have proven shoddy, misbegotten and fundamentally dishonest showing the populations that they had been being had for decades. They are seeing things being done that their elites had said were bad, when the US did them. Of course the EU is on a slippery slope Mr Schulz. You put it there.

YOu are right I think, and did you notice that his only answer is to teach the people how great the EU is??!!

After all of the ****-up of the leadership over the last 30 years??!!

I dont think it ever occurred to any of these chaps that the people might one day decide that they don't need to dissolve their nations into the EU, that staying a nation is the best way to go, and they dont have anything to say now the so many people have lost faith, all they have are their slogans and dreams of an EU utopia. But sound policy they dont have. An ear to the people they dont have. Internal security they dont have. The riches that are supposed to flow from cooperation in their utopia they dont have, everyone but Germany is dead Broke or worse, and Germany is getting there.

Inviting millions of Muslims into Europe was the maybe last straw, these yokels running EUROPE! dont even understand the basics. Now the bosses say that they either need to dissolve EUROPE! or hug each other closer. Well, the jury is sure out on which way that will go, but after this debacle of the invading hordes of Muslims who all too often want to kill them I dont like EUROPE'S chances.

More and more Europe is looking like the CCCP circa 1985, lots of tired slogans than almost no one believes anymore bandied about while almost nothing about government works.

Hm - Europeans and Americans have a lot in common - but some really big differences.

I don´t get it how how hard and emotional some American posters discuss the wickedness of the EU. As if their life and their personal blessedness depends on Europe giving up what you call Communism and giving up helping the refugees. Why????

The States and Europe are different in their political Point of view.
For most US Folks what is called social welfare here is communism and everything whats not direct democracy undemocratic.

For most EU Folk is the lack of social welfare deeply heartless and the way the president in the states is elected (money makes president) deeply undemocratic and kind od dictatorship of the rich.

Who knows whos is "right" - is there any "right"

thats fact for me and in best case a nice opportunity to discuss point of view.

but always repeating the same sentences (evil EU, Europe is communistic, they count on our weapons etc pp) like a Tibetan prayer wheel, is no diskussion, ist an attempt to brainwash in my eyes....

and I´m quite scared how hateful and emotional the postings of people like Hawkeye are (may be it´s my bad english and not meant that harsch). Why so engaged in this? Does it any harm to you wich mistakes are made in Europe? (and there are many made, as in the States too)

What truly threatens the EU is the erosion of its ideal, an expression of which is the perverse notion that states have to remain members, as if it has become a burden to be tolerated, rather than a merit to be coveted. Another expression of that reality is the careless expansion of the EU to include states that were neither ready for accession nor compatible with the EU's core states.

The survival and revival of the European ideal hinge on the EU's willingness to abandon the weariness that aims to preserve the status quo at all costs, and its willingness to regress in time and consolidate. Membership is a privilege, not a leverage; no state should be allowed to blackmail the union for a special status or any other undue advantage. I deeply wish for a Brexit. It hopefully won't be long before the disenchantment is gone and the EU starts seeing the opportunity the event presents.

I believe that if you follow the discussion here on the EU, you will find examples for its deficits are quite often precise. In the case of Schulz there is a lot to say, that is true. But repeating his populisms will not lead anywhere. They are always the same and are like Bernie Sanders stuck in ideologies from times long gone.

PS: Where is Suierland?

I had not thought of that. But you are right. Forcing someone to stay that wants to leave is an old Soviet trick.

Oh. I know the Sauerland. As to BS, he is the type of socialist Lafontain always was.

really? I thought him a Little bit more "Realpolitiker" - (I´m lucky you understand German ;o) )

in fact I have no problem with socialists - as long as they stay on the democratic side of the line, they can be replaced if they do harm then - the other ones we had all the time I can think and they did no good

I grew up with quite right political opinion (for European Standards) As a farmer Boy in the province it´s normal. (there has never been a lefty in charge in a local Office here ;) and In my first election I even voted for the fat man - but the older I get, the more left I become. The policy we have seems not fair for me.

I've been wondering this for years too on this forum. Making certain posts in topics will get you lots of likes~

  1. Sweden is the rape capital of the world
  2. Europeans are fat, lazy children at heart that we need to protect
  3. The muslims are running Europe (and versions of)
  4. Eurabia! Londonistan!
  5. Europeans are becoming a homogenous mulch and are all becoming the same country (and versions of: the Irish are losing identity / Brits have no identity etc)
  6. There are no guns in Europe, the governments have taken them away from the citizenry
  7. Universal Health Care is evil.
  8. There is no free speech in Europe.
  9. There are no freedoms in Europe. (Muslims control everything or "the Left" does)
  10. 1.5 million muslim immigrants are going to take over 400 million Europeans or even add them to the 22 million muslims in Europe and they will control all Europe.

I could go on but time is short. I noticed in another thread that Chagos was firefighting on the subject of "Arabic" taking over as second language in Sweden and neither the OP nor any of the others who agreed had actually read beyond the headline but I was too busy to tell him not to bother.

You have to learn to ignore and just keep repeating the truth we see around us.

Westfalian Congo, eh?

Just kidding, beautiful landscapes and all that. ;)

Do not laugh too loudly, were the EU goes today the US goes tomorrow. You do know it is all a house of cards and we are one of those cards, don't you?

I am not laughing at all, I love the idea of Europe, I loved living in Europe, I expect political leadership to be not corrupt and to be competent at doing their day jobs and to not spend all of their time lecturing the little people about how stupid we supposedly are.

I am much more to the side of crying.

Ok, I got a different message because that is often why some post such threads, as if it were good news.

OK fine, but I am a strange bird, assuming with me tends to go off the rails quickly.

Maybe this is not realistic, but I'd love to see a Europe-wide debate about a kind of "New Deal" for the EU.

Politicians of similar parties from different EU member states should unite and develop a *bold* idea for how to reform the EU, and then go campaigning on it.

That would kill two birds with one stone: For once, we'd see a genuinely European debate, rather than one watered down by the respective nationalistic sensitivities, it would cure the democratic deficit by actually including the public directly on a EU topic, and, if successful, could bring back the EU on a good track, by boldly giving it a new shape.

Why can't the moderate right forces develop a bold idea, so do the center-left forces, and then they run against each other and let the people decide -- in whole Europe, not just an individual member state?

But I'm not sure if the respective national politicians even want that, nor if the mechanisms for implementing that exist and/or are suited (think of an EU-wide referendum rather than referenda in the respective member states), or if it's even too late for that.

But I'm missing a bold plan, a vision, a "New Deal" -- when things go really wrong, people elect either a Hitler or an FDR, and while there are plenty of wannabe Hitlers around these days, I see no politician trying to be an FDR.

Okay, I'm stressing the FDR analogy way too much here, sorry for that, but I guess you get the idea. ;)
