Esper eyes $2.2 billion cut to military health care

Pentagon officials working on Defense Secretary Mark Esper's cost-cutting review of the department have proposed slashing military health care by $2.2 billion, a reduction that some defense officials say could effectively gut the Pentagon’s health care system during a nationwide pandemic.

The proposed cut to the military health system over the next five years is part of a sweeping effort Esper initiated last year to eliminate inefficiencies within the Pentagon’s coffers. But two senior defense officials say the effort has been rushed and driven by an arbitrary cost-savings goal, and argue that the cuts to the system will imperil the health care of millions of military personnel and their families as the nation grapples with Covid-19.

The real reason behind this proposal is not cost-cutting.
"Esper and his deputies have argued that America's private health system can pick up the slack." Oh yeah, that would be so much cheaper.

anything that happens during the Trump era will have to be reviewed and potentially fixed. he (and his guys) are just too good at ****ing up everything.

now, Esper was previously a lobbyist so we need to watch this closely.

Who gives a **** anymore?

I mean right?

Almost 200,000 Americans dead and an open attack on the Democratic Process and they are dead silent or full on supportive of the effort...

At this point Trump could literally load up cages full of troops and drop them into the middle of the ocean and Trumpists would say:

“Yeah but he has the authority to do so. Stop it with the TDS “

"Private healthcare will pick up the slack" means "veterans can pay for it themselves."

Did he think we wouldn't notice?

Yes. He thinks all Americans are as ignorant as his supporters are.

Trump is going to slash the size of our military after the election which will help mitigate the need for a lot of these services.

What kind of fresh idiocy is this? Did "Q" tell you about this?

Newsflash: he increased its budget by around 70 billion while pushing through the tax cuts that had us borrowing over one trillion a year in a "best economy ever".

There is no way Trump will be able to slash the US military budget.

Even if he wanted to, he would not be allowed to do so. We are talking about organizations that get tens of billions of dollars spread out across the US to ensure congressional support.

Now for the deep state part, if he actually pushed for that, Trumps family would be threatened with tragic accidents like failing out of a window form a tall building with no windows. The pee tape would magically appear,

It will put more money into the pockets of trump's buddies. The top ten percent once again benefiting and nobody else.

Why after the election? Why not in the last four years?

As Obama said, after the election there is more latitude to do what you want. All the signs point to that being his next big move. I wouldn't be surprised to see him order a withdrawal from Korea.

This is wrong. There shouldn't be cuts to military medical support they have earned.

This is for his base. These are the ones who vote for him.

Hopefully, this is being done for a good reason.

I imagine COVID will thin their herd as well, but otherwise, nope. Perhaps you missed the part of the article talking about the cuts being conditional on something or the other...

Many years ago, well before the Age of Trump, the military medical system shifted a huge portion of healthcare for military dependents to a private system. It's called Tricare. It works pretty well. My wife had four brain aneurism repaired and went through 10 years of breast cancer treatment within that system. Since I've retired from the Navy I also get treatment under Tricare. The system also offers a "Tricare for Life" which is a wrapper around Medicare.

Part of the reason for farming out dependent and retiree care to private enterprise was that military doctors and other healthcare professional were needed to deal with active duty members and the fact few MDs were joining.

So, yeah, farming some military HC to private insurance works well.

The enemy must be both incredibly weak and incredibly dangerous simultaneously. Thats probably why they dont make the deep state out to be as effective as our government agencies who actually pull off successful coups.

Ironically, Trump has an ad out claiming to have helped troops, focusing on the military. He's such a piece of garbage.

Tricare is not great if you dont live near a military facility. Many doctors, especially specialists, won't take Tricare because of the paperwork. I know from experience. It took getting off Tricare, getting a new insurance to get my son's MRI that identified his brain mass. Had we been on Tricare throughout the last 3 years, we wouldn't know about it because the MRI that identified it was being done as a followup, just to monitor another issue. Considering where it is, knowing about it helps in his academics, helps us explain to teachers why he has some issues learning. It also gets checked every 18 months for any growth.

I'm actually supportive of military medicine. My experience with the birth of our first in a military hospital was absolutely wonderful compared to the birth of the second in a private hospital. So much more support in the milotary one.
