Embryonic Stem Cells Poll - Test Your Principles

Would You Accept Treatment From Federal Govt. Funded Embryonic Stem Cell Cures?

I do not think it's a "fair" argument to be against this bill, a bill that could forever change medical care in the USA and the world in anticipation of events that have not happened and have never, ever been suggested in any Congressional legislation.

What do you mean never happened? Chimera organisms are being created today! Mice with human brain cells have been created already in the name of embryonic stem cell research. The ovaries of aborted females are being used today already for embryonic stem cell research. So what are you saying will never happen? It's happening right now!

Snyder is injecting human embryonic stem cells into monkeys and is convinced that there's little danger.

"It's true that there is a huge amount of similarity, but the difference are huge," Snyder said. "You will never ever have a little human trapped inside a mouse or monkey's body."

Well the bill in question does not oppose the creation of chimeras. Does it? I read it and didn't see anything that made the creation of chimeras a disqualifier. And if we federally fund embryonic stem cells how do you know the creation of chimeras won't be included in the "embryonic stem cell research?"

Everyone wants to cure parkinsons. But how do you feel about using embryonic stem cells to create chimps with human DNA and/or human brain cells? Is that ethical in your opinion?

To be perfectly honest I do not know enough about that specific topic. On the surface I would still rather have government sponsored embryonic stem cell research than not.

Are you actually worried that we're going to create some hybrid, monstrous species?

Well we are creating hybrid species right now. It's not a future worry. It's something that exists already. Animals with the DNA of two species. They're written about all the time even in mainstream mags like Discover. My fear is that these animals will be created and the scientists will deny they have any humanity at all despite the fact that human embryos were used in their creation. So yes, ethically, I view it as something we should be concerned about. Most people hear that "embryonic stem cell research" may one day cure this and this and blah blah blah. But I think it's important to regulate the types of research being done and not just the source of the cells.

It's like any other type of research. I'm not against ALL research involving animals however some of it is cruel, unusual, and not at all justified. Now when you throw embryonic stem cells into the mix you are basically talking about using living human organisms as "research" and much of that research involves mixing these embryonic cells with the cells of other species.

The prospect of all-female conception

By Steve Connor, Science Editor

Published: 13 April 2007

Women might soon be able to produce sperm in a development that could allow lesbian couples to have their own biological daughters, according to a pioneering study published today.
Scientists are seeking ethical permission to produce synthetic sperm cells from a woman's bone marrow tissue after showing that it possible to produce rudimentary sperm cells from male bone-marrow tissue.

Think I'll start a poll on this one.
