Elon Musk has activated Starlink satellite internet to facilitate communication in Ukraine:

Elon Musk Says Starlink Satellite Service Is Activated in Ukraine, Where the Russian Invasion Has Caused Internet Disruptions

SpaceX founder Elon Musk tweeted Saturday evening that the company's Starlink satellite internet service "is now active in Ukraine" with "more terminals en route."

Musk's announcement came in direct response to a plea from a Ukrainian government official for more Starlink stations amid a Russian invasion that disrupted Ukraine's internet services.

"While you try to colonize Mars — Russia try to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space — Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people!" Mykhailo Fedorov, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, tweeted at Musk earlier on Saturday. "We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations and to address sane Russians to stand."

I don't think anybody could accuse Musk of being a sock puppet for Russia.

On the other hand, Musk says Biden is a sock puppet:

Okay…

Except you can’t just select “Starlink” on your phone or computer like it’s WiFi. It requires special receivers to access and 99% of Ukrainians don’t have access to those.

Allowing a satellite system to be accessed by individuals that don't have satellite equipment is a 'nothing'. Just a PR move.

No shit, Sherlocks. He sent receivers too and they can be shared by dozens of people. You guys will hate on Musk no matter what he does, so stop pretending it's for real reasons.

I’ll applaud him when those receivers actually get to an active warzone and people can actually use them.

Elon Musk is the modern day Thomas Edison, and that isn’t a compliment.

No you won't. At no point will you praise Musk, especially not for a technology that wouldn't exist without him.

Even if you compared him to Edison, yes, that absolutely would be an accomplishment. Edison was a ****ing asshole but he objectively contributed to the technical advancement of society. A problem Musk haters have is they can't call him an asshole while also recognizing his technical accomplishments, of which there are many.

He's got Putin on his electric chair.

Edison stole the credit for other people’s inventions and deliberately stymied the development of technologies that didn’t directly profit him.

Musk has ZERO technical accomplishments. He didn’t design Starlink. He didn’t design the rockets that put it in orbit. He didn’t design the receiver or the software that make them function. Actual scientists and engineers did that work.

One oligarch against another.

Jesus christ. By your definition, no one has ever designed a rocket, satellite or anything, because they didn't do it alone. Without Musk there would be no SpaceX, Starlink, or Falcon rockets to carry the satellites to orbit.

You can think someone is an asshole without just straight up being ridiculous and delusional about reality. Why don't you call Starlink's competitors and see how they're helping Ukraine? Oh, that's right you can't, because there aren't any.

Musk hasn’t been involved in the design process AT ALL. He’s a manager and financier. He has zero technical achievements.

You know what else Starlink, Falcon Rockets, and SpaceX wouldn’t exist but for? SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS.

A technology that wouldn't exist without him?

What *exactly* is that?

LOL

Musk started and funded SpaceX and was actively involved in the design and decision making of the falcon rockets. As an engineer, I find your claim that only the design engineers and no one else deserves credit to be totally bizarre. It takes tens of thousands of people to design these things, kid.

Reusable rockets.

A mobile, low latency, high bandwidth satellite internet network.

Source for your claim Musk was involved in the design process for the rockets other than as a manager. And no, internal company propaganda doesn’t count.

On the other hand, Musk says Biden is a sock puppet:

Such pointless hyperpartisan twaddle. It's got nothing to do with your own thread, but you just gotta slip it in everywhere. Bumper stickers.

(As for Musk, it's obvious he has decided that the things he is helping bring him into the world entitle him to selfishness and greed, so he's openly backing the party most likely to keep him from paying meaningful taxes out of pure self-interest. I don't think he means that for one minute.

If he does mean it, then maybe we should be thinking about giving his engineering teams more credit because how the **** does anyone decide that the guy who got the world to line up behind him and against Russia is a sock puppet of Russia? Does he think Putin is a super-genius, too?)

If you read that tweet from Musk I posted in the OP, it mentions he's sending more terminals en route.

To an active warzone. I’ll believe it when they actually arrive and can be used. I’m going to bet it will be after the conflict is over and regular internet has been re-established.

I watch the Boca chica live cam often. It puzzles the mind how many components go into such an endeavor.

A weird thread by @sanman where he praises billionaires with private satellite internet so he can attack US politicians actually bothering Putin.

So strange.

This is significant. A single receiving antenna the size of a large pizza box connected to some routers and WI-FI access points can provide direct access to the internet for many many people. Cannot be blocked or censored. Similar to satellite phones. Can even be used for military communication.

Edison was no saint. As usual, the sanitized version taught in American schools doesn't inform students of the dirt on Edison.

Of course, when Biden wants to spend other people's money to "Build Back Better" then suddenly everyone is supposed to be awash in gratitude -- Thanks for Building it Back Joe! Thank You, O Great Builder!

This technology is a serious blow to authoritarian governments who seek to control access to information of their citizens since it is not controlled by their great firewalls. National borders do not extend to geosynchronous orbit.
