What is it?
California is considering electronic license plates which would look normal when the car is moving, but when stopped at a red light, would flash advertisements to the motorist behind them (rear plate only).

Why do it?

California lawmakers are considering this to open a new revenue stream for the State, claiming it would help alleviate the existing $19 billion dollar deficit.

What's the down side?
How long before kids hack into this and show porn, play video's, or use it to promote their own things or, to turn the license plate dark to avoid police, or change the plate # for criminal activity? What is the potential to distract the driver while slowing behind a stopped car for more accidents?

That's just what we need... one more distraction on the road. :doh

It's bull****, how much will these plates cost? Why not just tax that hell out of illegals?

Absolutely not. Essentially they are hijacking all cars and making them moving billboards. If someone's car is going to be forced to advertise then they deserve the profits. Plus I can't see this as a safe thing either. In many states it's illegal to have neon and other flashy things around license plates because they say that they distract other drivers and can cause wrecks. I don't think flashing adds on stopped cars would be much safer for traffic. Would this not also remove Californian citizens' rights to own vanity plates?

That is pathetic. WTF has our country come to?

Another dumb idea proposed by our state legislature, among a whole lot of other dumb ideas they've come up with.

I have a good idea for them: Let's quit spending money we don't have. Now, there's an original plan, one they don't seem to have thought of before.

Maybe they can have an electronic license plate Bingo system. Motorists could have Bingo ready devices put onto their steering wheels. It would all be connected to the numbers on the license plates. Payments would be electronically sent. People could play while stuck in traffic!

That could pave the way for more sophisticated gambling while driving schemes, all to fund the government's bloated budgets! :peace

"Sir, did you see the license plate of the man who hit you?"

"Yes, officer. It was a blue Dodge with California tags. The plate had some golden arches on it and said I'm lovin it".

I voted no. I do not like the idea of the state extorting people into turning their cars into advertising billboards. Its bad enough they make you pay a tax on your car every year in the form of vehicle registrations. If Commiefornia wants to aliviate their debt then they can cut out a lot of state services and crack down on illegals seeing 4-5 billion of that is spent on illegals.

Okay wait... what service, exactly, could the state advertise to raise money?

Secondly, the only way I'd support advertising on one's vehicle is if the person who own the vehicle gets the money from it. This already happens.

Electronic license plates .....an excellent idea, if used to the benefit of the state and the driver(primarily)..
This particular idea of displaying advertisements is NOT GOOD!!
I'd like to see advertisements banned!
If California truly wishes to save money, they should rid themselves of those foolish people and their ideas; downsize their government, if possible, and reduce the pay of those who do nothing....executives, CEOs...or just get rid of them...
No, I am not a small government Liberatian...but I could be.....

"Ram the car in front of you and win a free ipod!"

astonishingly stupid idea

There is an idea, and from a conservative....will wonders never cease..
But this is a good idea, right now, I do not know if they are taxed at all.
Our federal government should "mainstream" them, grant all of them who are here citizenship and tax them....
Why is this not done?????
Who is against this?

LOL...just something else to be hacked and your identity stolen...yet tyranny is just around the corner.

Maybe corporations can start sponsoring individual motorists. I'd sell advertising space on my car for the right price!

This is an absolutely terrible idea. Not only is it ****ty to force someone to display advertising on their personal vehicle and not see any money from it, but I can nearly guarantee that within 24 hours of them coming out, there will be detailed instructions on the internet describing exactly how to hack them to display whatever it is you want them to say. Hell, I've only been thinking about it for 30 seconds and I've already come up with lots of fun ideas for them.

1. Show porn
2. Swear at people
3. Advertise for something I want to advertise for (a business, a website, whatever)
4. Show someone else's license plate number so if I'm photographed by a red light camera or speed camera I won't get the ticket.

And that's only assuming that I could hack my own. If there's some way to hack into them remotely, that's when it gets REALLY fun.

I almost wish they'd do it though, just for the hilarity that would surely ensue.

these things would be expensive as hell...California must seriously be run by a bunch of monkeys. I can't believe they are even considering this.

LMAO..yes you are correct.

Gross.

Just when you think corporatism can't get more rampant.

Utterly appalling idea.

The driver is FORCED to be a rolling advertisement for something he has no say in and gets no revenue from? Ridiculous beyond all words.
