Elderly California store owner fires at armed robbery suspect who shouts, 'He shot my arm off!’

A submachine gun would outperform a semi-auto AR15 at close range and significantly so at super-close range. This would be highly relevant for indoor shootouts. Thus how will a law-abiding gun owner hope to defend against criminals who by mini-UZI's on the black market? If you want such firepower then why not just rent them at a gun club and keep them there?

Your premise is not universally true. It's not even a good generalization.

A single well aimed bullet can outperform a poor attempt to spray a magazine full.

Then why not use a double-barrel rifle as opposed to a semi-auto one? You'd have a spare round ready to fire immediately if you missed the first shot. Checkmate!

The semi-automatic has another round ready to fire immediately, within the limits of the cyclical rate of its mechanism. Which very few trigger fingers can exceed. I can fire two rounds from my AR-15 about as fast as I can fire two from my O/U shotgun.

So you're arguing for fully auto sub-machine guns to be made legal ?

The problem with assault rifles is that they can be a jack-of-all trades, master-of-none sort of weapon. A sniper beats them at long-range. A submachine gun beats them at close range. Then a heavier semi-auto rifle would beat them at medium range by absorbing more of the recoil. An assault rifle is designed to be used as part of team whereas many shootouts with criminals are one-on-one affairs. You can say that you'd need an assault rifle to be more versatile when you're outnumbered. Although this only raises the question of what you'd do when the group that outnumbers you also have assault rifles.

One difference between traditional semi-autos and assault semi-autos is the length of the weapon. The longer the rifle, the further away the centre-of-gravity is. Thus the relative weight of a gun is also important in determining its danger to society. A low-magnigication scope would work better on the old-fashioned rifles for medium range.

Doesnt matter if its true or not the majority of what fox news says is biased
how do you know that they didnt twist this to make it look like a self defense
you see a fox news article and immediately believe it?

Even if its true just look for better sources.

The fox news comments section is flooded with racist and hateful comments
that site is not a good source of information.
Have you seen the surveillance video? NO just making stupid comments. Stupid rant about FOX!!

The short barreled assault rifle is closer to being a master of more roles than aSub machine-gun
Which is why SWAT teams generally don't use SMG's any more.

A well-trained shooter using a short-barreled shotgun would probably outperform their enemy with an assault rifle when it comes to short-range confrontations. The problem is we don't always know the likely range of an attack before it happens. Nor do we know how accurate our first shot will be. A team of shooters is far better at balancing the risk than an individual. Will the assailant be out in the garden or did they already get inside?

The reasoning why SWAT teams abandoned the SMG for the greater flexibility of the short barreled assault rifle.

By what criteria ?

A shotgun can disperse the pellets at a greater width than a bullet. So you can injure the target person even if you miss the bulk of the aim. Also, a short-barreled shotgun will likely have a shorter barrel than a typical assault rifle. This makes it even more flexible.

Flexibility in the depth of targets rather than the range of motion of the arm I imagine.

So what ?
A single pellet might kill a bird but not a determined assailant. A 5.56mm NATO round however...

Yes, a single pellet might kill an assailant, determined or not.

And portable.

First of all BULLSHIT! Fox is the least bias source in news.

Second before you make a moronic post at least look at the video and interview by law enforcement. Educated yourself BEFORE responding and looking foolish as both show complete and utter justification. I would have fired again and insured the end of the threat.

Lastly the old man had a heart attack following the incident so please pray for his health if you believe. Seems he's gonna need it.

The thug was in critical but stable condition. The mighty and EVIL AR-15 lost again. This time to a shotgun.
LOL What a joke. THe delusions of right wingers. Sorry, facts show otherwise. Yeah, I know those facts and data are just biased. ANd hey, Fox news told use everything else is biased and they are "fair and balanced" it must be true LOL

Man, must be so depressing being an always wrong right winger and being this out of touch with reality.

And if you think about it, a person holding a hand gun correctly takes up about as much space.

If you're willing to go through the expenses of fortifying your home into a castle then a further difficulty is that you'd be exposed anytime you step out of your little castle. Sports stars and musical celebrities are in danger of assassination by simply stepping out into the pitch or stage in front of thousands of people. Maybe Hollywood actors don't always feel the urgency of gun control because they often record the acting in studios behind closed doors.

Sorry but the opinion of someone who thinks dial wielding pistols is a valuable technique means about as much to me as the opinion of my dog.

Yes that is why the worlds most elite military and law enforcement units all use shotguns for room clearing.

Oh wait.

Your ignorance is showing once again. AR-15s are not assault rifles. As with most posters who are completely ignorant about firearms, you simply substitute "scary looking black firearm" as your moronic definition for "assault rifle." Well, to further your education and demonstrate just how ignorant you truly are, this is an AR-12 12-guage shotgun:
AR12.jpg

The AR-12 is NOT an assault rifle, although it does use a rifled barrel, is black, and may look scary to ignorant hoplophobes.
