El Salvador’s President Says He Won’t Return Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported

  • Deportations: In an appearance at the White House with President Trump, President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador said his country would not order the return a Maryland man who was mistakenly deported. Mr. Bukele’s visit came as the Trump administration has stepped up its use of a notorious Salvadoran prison to hold migrants deported by the United States.
  • Lawsuit: The American Civil Liberties Union filed another lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s use of a powerful wartime statute to deport Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador. The lawsuit, brought in Federal District Court in Colorado, was the third of its kind filed in recent days.

It's almost like El Salvador and our White House are run by a bunch of lawless thugs, who won't do the right thing because it's the right thing.

Makes us speculate whether the Maryland man is still alive.

Add to this the idea that Trump is open to sending our own US citizens to foreign prisons, and we are in a very, very dark place as a country.

My guess is that this is what Trump directed them to say. There is no way I will accept or believe that Trump doesn't have the power and clout to have them do what ever he says. After all he got them to take all of them in the first place.

Monstrous. If Trump and the other cancerous Republicans are extracted from the White House, I think this is grounds for embargoing El Salvador Cuba-style.

They want to establish the precedent.

The United States is set to pay El Salvador $6 million to imprison 300 alleged members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang that it deports to the Central American country, for one year, the Associated Press reported on Saturday, citing an internal memo.
"El Salvador confirms it will house these individuals for one (1) year, pending the United States’ decision on their long term disposition," AP quoted a memo from El Salvador's Foreign Ministry as saying.

“I would point out that is pennies on the dollar in comparison to the cost of life and the cost it would impose on the American taxpayer to house these terrorists and maximum security prisons here in the United States of America.” press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at her regular briefing Monday.

In a social media post over the weekend, El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele said the U.S. "will pay a very low fee" for his country to house the migrants, "but a high one for us."

It's about the money. Shocking.

Oh, no, what can our country do against mighty El Salvador? They are no less a powerhouse than the Soviet Union under Khrushchev was. We have to tread very carefully when dealing with them and negotiating the release of prisoners from their Gulags.

That sounds like bullshit. He's meeting with mango MAGAt magnet. MMM probably asked him to make the statement...so he can flaunt ignoring the judge's order.

But it ends up making him look weak, that he cant negotiate the release with El Salvador's president. So much for the "great negotiator."

It’s crazy we’re paying them to do this so Trump can inflict terror on American citizens.

It’s our money funding this, so Trump can scare everyone into obedience.

Exactly! Same here.

"Set to pay?" If we havent paid them yet, then withhold payment until they release the guy into US custody.

I still call bullshit on this "statement."

Yeah, the one year is bullshit. Those people are in a prison for those sentenced to life. They will die there.

If it was me as el presidente, I’da brought the young man back with me on my plane, you all figure this out.

Why would he do that? He only cares about what Trump thinks of him, not the rest of the US.

He does, he just does not want to follow the law.

He thumbed his nose at the SCOTUS. Now the only option we have is his removal from office.

The Supreme Court are not directing the administration to start releasing criminals. They are directing to return a wrongfully deportation which doesn’t require much work. How hard it is to agree that you made a mistake and make this go away with his return. Not hard.

Trump needs to serve hard time for what he has done. Unlawfully deporting an innocent man is not an official act. Trump CAN and WILL be held accountable for that.

I am aware of that. I was being ironic.

I think they (they being Trump and Bukele) do not want this man released back to the United States in order to prevent him discussing how horrific and terrible the condition of the prison is, and to spark popular sentiment against sending people to El Salvador's modernized Dachau concentration camps. If the man is even alive, that is. To my knowledge, we do not even have verifiable proof of life.

The whole point of deporting these people, including US citizens, is to keep them out of the reach of US courts.

Keep this in mind when someone you care about suddenly disappears.
Essentially, Trump and his goons are purposely violating the rights of those they deport. Got it.

What, El Salvador doesn't have any planes, pilots, or airports?

My guess is that this is what Trump directed them to say. There is no way I will accept or believe that Trump doesn't have the power and clout to have them do what ever he says. After all he got them to take all of them in the first place.

There is no way it isn't what Trump directed him to say.

It's as ludicrous as a toddler found standing over a smashed partially-eaten chocolate cake with chocolate smeared all over his face denying that he'd eaten any of the cake.

He thumbed his nose at the SCOTUS.
I don't know about that. SCOTUS very carefully chose and used the term "facilitate". And the SCOTUS ruling carefully took executive power into account. The specifically did not override it
