Sun Myung Moon due in London after Britain lifts ban Fri Nov 4, 1:48 AM ET



LONDON (AFP) - Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church, is to fly into London after the British government lifted a 10-year ban on his entering the country, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Moon, 86, was banned from Britain in 1995 by the then-Conservative government on grounds that his presence would not be "conducive to the common good for reasons of public order," the Daily Telegraph recalled.

Banned in the U.K...
...but although Britain's Home Secretary has told the Times owner in no certain terms that he's not welcome in England, his group recently addressed the House of Lords. Any English readers care to help me understand this?

The secretary wrote:
The Home Secretary has personally directed that you should be excluded from the United Kingdom on the grounds that your presence here would not be conducive to the public good for reasons of public order.

...The Home Secretary decided to exclude Reverend Moon primarily because of the methods used by the Unification Church to recruit new members and the adverse impact that recruitment has on members and their families...As founder and head of the Unification Church, the Reverend Moon must take responsibility for these methods. The Secretary of State considers that the Reverend Moon and the Unification Church are synonymous, and that the Reverend Moon directs the Unification Church as he would private assets.

...The [Home Secretary] is aware that . . . the methods of recruitment which gave us concern are no longer used. He is aware, for example, that the organization in the United Kingdom no longer discourages members from contact with their families

...He is concerned that a visit by Reverend Moon could revitalise the organization in the United Kingdom and prompt a return to previous methods of recruitment and retention.

Moon's group claims that it was invited to the House of Lords "by the invitation of Lord Ahmed, the youngest and first Muslim member of the House of Lords." A baronness, Lady Uddin, also Muslim, has also participated in Moon's event.

According to Iran-Contra journalist Robert Parry, Moon himself sided with Argentina against Britain in the Falklands War.
Indeed, in the early 1980s, amid widespread human rights abuses, Moon had used friendships with the military dictators in Argentina and Uruguay to invest in those two countries. Moon was such a pal of the Argentine generals that he garnered an honorary award for siding with Argentina's junta in the Falklands War.

It looks like he's also been banned from Bulgaria.

Of course, he's a couple sheet to the wind too:
Jews have objected to his doctrine that the Holocaust is a consequence for killing Jesus. Or his conviction and prison term in the United States for tax evasion as evidence that he is a fraud and a deliberate felon.

Left off the masthead are its publisher, Dong Moon Joo, and its founder, Moon himself.
