CAIRO, June 15 (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi said he had cut all diplomatic ties with Damascus on Saturday and called for a no-fly zone over Syria, pitching the most populous Arab state firmly against President Bashar al-Assad.

Addressing a rally called by Sunni Muslim clerics in Cairo, the Sunni Islamist head of state said: "We decided today to entirely break off relations with Syria and with the current Syrian regime."

He also warned Assad's allies in the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shi'ite militia Hezbollah to pull back from fighting in Syria.

"We stand against Hezbollah in its aggression against the Syrian people," Mursi said. "Hezbollah must leave Syria - these are serious words. There is no space or place for Hezbollah in Syria."

Moris shows that he is firmly against Assad. He is also calling for a no fly zone over Syria which would be very difficult to establish since Assad has a well established air defense system in his country.

That's really interesting. I wonder what he'll do if Iran either directly or indirectly does after Israel as part of a retaliation.

The coming war.

Egypt, Libya, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Yemen, USA, NATO, EU.

vs.

Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, Iraq.

Saying and doing nothing during two years of civil war, only taking a position after America provides military support to the rebels, is not taking a "firm" stand. Morsi just knows not to shoot himself and his fascist Brothers in the foot.

Heya Luther. :2wave: Not Surprising really. I figured this was coming. After the Egyptians stated their Civilians could go and fight inside Syria. Evidenced.

Egypt says citizens free to join fight in Syria.....
Associated Press – Thu, Jun 13, 2013 <<<<< More here.

CAIRO (AP) — A senior official in Egypt's presidency says Egyptians are free to join the fight in Syria and will not be prosecuted upon return.

In a response to an Associated Press question Thursday about the government's stance on citizens going to fight alongside Syrian rebels, Khaled al-Qazzaz said that "the right of travel or freedom of travel is open for all Egyptians".

He said that after the 2011 uprising, the government no longer punishes Egyptians for what they do in other countries. Al-Qazzaz, a foreign affairs adviser to Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, said the presidency does not consider Egyptian nationals in Syria a threat to Egypt's security.

It is not known how many Egyptians have gone to fight in Syria — and al-Qazzaz said he did not have figures. But organizations from Egypt's ultraconservative Salafi movement are believed to help organize movements for Egyptians who want to join the fight. Islamist websites have reported that up to several dozen Egyptians have been killed while fighting in Syria the past two years, though the number has not been independently confirmed.

Earlier this month, influential Egyptian cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who has close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, urged Sunnis everywhere to join the fight against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"Everyone who has the ability and has training to kill ... is required to go," said al-Qaradawi, a popular television cleric who is based in Qatar. "We cannot ask our brothers to be killed while we watch."

A group of Muslim clerics, including al-Qaradawi, met in Cairo on Thursday and said it was a religious duty to back the rebels through whatever means possible.

The meeting underlined "the duty of jihad to support our brothers in Syria, with spirit, money and weapons, and all forms of jihad aimed at rescuing the Syrian people from the crimes and killings by the sectarian regime ... everyone according to his ability," hard-line Egyptian cleric Mohammed Hassan said, reading a statement from the group. He said Iran and Hezbollah's support for Assad "against our people in Syria is considered a declaration of war on Muslims in general."

A delegation of clerics then met with Morsi at the presidential palace on Thursday. The Egyptian president plans to attend a large rally in support of the Syrian opposition at Cairo's stadium on Saturday, which has been organized by the senior clerics.

The Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, is also calling on people to aid Syrians

"The more we fuel this conflict with weaponry and soldiers, it turns into a regional war," he said.

The hard-line Salafi Nour Party also says Egyptians should be free to help Syrians in combat.....snip~

Well, MMC, I think understand the Salafist side of this but my concern is that a lot of these folks are VERY hard line and if they prevail that could cause a whole lot of trouble for secular interests in Turkey and, obviously, the Israeli's. Furthermore, we seem to be once again provisioning a people who do not have our interests in mind and when we've done this in the past it hasn't worked out terribly well.

Re: Egypt Cuts Ties With Syria: Mohamed Morsi Orders Closing Of Damascus Embassy In C

Is this a prelude to a regional Sunni-Shia conflict?

You bet.

What will Israel do? Sit on the sidelines, giggling with an apple martini.

We already have al Nusra and others stating there will be no elections after the removal of Assad. The FSA Rebels fighters most support al Nusra over their command. Over 3k have aligned with Al Nusra. 29 Civilian committees from all over Syria are supporting and back al Nusra. All of this is in the news. Its like our media people and Pols think the American people are stupid to not see this crap.

Oh lets not talk about what the Rebels do. Just like they blame Assad for the 93-100k deaths. Knowing without a doubt that the Rebels have killed 41k. Also knowing the Rebels have gone after Christians massacring them and burning down their Churches. Or any that don't support Assad or even them.

Now this BS about 150 deaths with Chemical weapons. Pushed by the French and the Brits. Really.....150 people out of over 78 million and with reports that the Rebels did the same. Yet Obama will throw us into this proxy war. This is exactly what the Russians and the Chinese want. We will be forced to reduce our presence in the Pacific Theatre. Obama is getting us bogged down in Africa too. While trying to play like the War on Terror is had been significantly reduced. Despite the AQ morph into the Hydra, and all these Al Sharia groups rising up from Yemen to the Mahgreb.

Moreover now the Al Nusra and others are saying After Assad goes.....then they will come after us. This is a no win situation for us. We do not need to get involved into Syria to deal with Iran. Nor to manipulate them.

With all these Sunni Clerics calling for Jihad and stirring all the tensions, and bringing into fill play the sectarian divided of Islam.....shows us what the real intentions are by the Sunni despite them always pontificating that they are Democratic and our allies. Also realizing that the MB and AQ are connected and intertwined. Should never be forgotten.

Not so sure as that, given that what you say here http://www.debatepolitics.com/middl...ng-damascus-embassy-cairo.html#post1061932417 is correct but that it is SA salafi/jihaddist inspired. This is just unleashing the most hellish tinderbox started in Afghanistan in the 80's and very much going according to the Saudi's dream..... We have already seen video of the rebels in Syria saying their intent is Global.

Ironically Gaddafi was the first to warn us of this but it has been on the move since Iraq if not Afghanistan, aided and abetted all the time by the US.

so as Europe is going to be as at risk from these people running amock as Russia is, I think we will be seeing

US/UK/France

v Russia, Iran, Syria, Lebanon or hezbollah, Iraq and possibly part of Europe including Western Europe.

Saudi Arabia wins.

The US/UK/France stance is madness.

I think Alistair Crooke gets the situation quite well in this interview

?West miscalculated the potential of Arab World anger? ? RT News

I note he hopes there may come a window of opportunity and believes that Russia is the country best suited to mediate that. I fear we have just seen that window and the recent US move may have finally sealed it.

The US are pretty much damned if they do damned if they don't. For two years now, there has been a sizable block calling for US intervention and one thing the US administration cannot be accused of is rushing into this conflict. I have NO idea of such a 'window' for opportunity, that you refer too, other than to say Russia has maintained it's support for the Assad regime (when perhaps it should have used their apparent influence) to make Assad step down. The West has bided it's time over what the opposition is actually compiled of, and who they represent. I'm not convinced we truly know other than it being set in the Sunni strain of ISLAM.

Chanel 4 has done some on-depth coverage of the 'migrant brigade'

Britons fighting with Syria's jihadi 'band of brothers' - Channel 4 News

Up close and personal with a British jihadi in Syria - Channel 4 News

Which pretty much identifies our next set of suicide bombers.

It's a very messy conflict with no easy answers/

Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, Iraq.

Iraq's government is not too firmly in the pocket of Iran to betray the country that established it and supported it against insurgency until a year ago.

Iran is about to get the crap bombed out of it for other reasons and has been eating a big crap (thanks to sanctions) for a long time. It's in no position to fight a war against anyone, let alone the West. If Iran entered outright war against the West, the regime would cease to exist in a matter of days. That would leave Hez and Assad without Iranian support. It would also greatly weaken Hamas and terrorists in Africa, especially North Sudan and the remnants of Al Shabaab.

When the Iranian regime goes down, with it goes a large part of global terrorism. I eagerly await the destruction of that regime and a new tomorrow for the good people of Iran.

We helped Afghanistan defeat the Soviets.

How did THEY pay us back?

Most Islamist terrorism these days is committed by Sunnis, not Shia.

I'm not sure where the word "Afghanistan" is mentioned in the post that you responded to.

If you are not aware that the Iranian regime openly supplies Hamas, Hez, Assad, Bashir, Al Shabaab and other African terrorists, then you need to read more before we can debate.

Yes, but Iran is the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the entire world.

So the road to Tehran lies through Damascus?

Now its all starting to come together.

I remember there was a guy here once, at debatepolitics, that was like "What?! If the Iranian regime openly supplied Hamas then everyone would abandon them!!!" When he was shown the Iranian regime and Hamas acknowledging significant support, Hamas thanking the Iranian regime and the Iranian regime promising continued support in many forms... he disappeared. I haven't seen the guy since. Weird.

Iran is Hamas' only source for money?

Are you against lessening Hamas' support?

Are you against lessening Hamas' support?

Hamas gets money from various sources, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Latin America.

You mean by "liberating" Iran?

Surely not. The USA has no business "liberating" Iran.
