Ed Shultz Blackballed from Armed Forces Radio

H

hipsterdufus

Armed Forces Radio (AFR) is a station that broadcasts to American troops overseas through “over 1,000 outlets in more than 175 countries.” It currently features an hour of programming by right-wing host Rush Limbaugh. There is no comparable progressive program.

Full Story ... http://thinkprogress.org/2005/10/17/barber-cancels-shultz/

That was supposed change. Ed Schultz – the host of the most popular progressive radio show in the country — was supposed to start broadcasting on Armed Forces radio. Senator Harkin put a bill on the Senate to allow Ed Shultz's show to be broadcast on AFR as promised. It was veteoed.

AFR’s own mandate states that all political programming shall be characterized by its fairness and balance.

It seems that AFN thinks it's best for the troops to just listen to Rush Dobson and Dr. Laura.

BTW- AFR is funded by our tax dollars.

Here is AFR's full schedule:

/exactly what are we fighting for again? Oh, yeah ... freedom.

Oops. Sorry I mispelled Blackballed.

The problem is there is not the demand for a liberal radio personaility on AFRN.....In fact the troops would like to have Rush on 3 hours a day instead of 1..........

I am not very familiar with Mr. Shultz, or his radio show, but if it's anything like some of these anti-war shows, I can see why they would not allow it to be run. That being said, I will have to wait to hear more about this mans show, and how many soldiers actually have asked to have it included in their daily programming.

Mod Note.
Fixed. But I won't correct "mispelled" to "misspelled" in that post. :2razz:
/Mod Note

I personally can't stand Ed Schultz. He's the liberal version of Limbaugh, and I can't stand Limbaugh.

Granted they should have all sides portrayed regardless of ideology because the program is tax payer funded, but the same could be said for NPR in which one of the head programmers admitted to the show having a liberal bias.

He supports the troops, the war, and proves it in every broadcast, that can only be good for those over there, sacrificing everday! I don't think those over there want to hear negative broadcasts, it's not helpful, and will do nothing to change things there, only put those people at risk.

I used to listen to Ed Schultz regularly when I passed through the Fargo, ND, area and he - like many lefties - was actually quite reasonable about local issues (like the idiot idea of banning dodge ball in grade schools). But, again like many lefties, he took leave of his senses when the issues grew beyond his local area and could only repeat his erroneous bumper sticker slogans more loudly whenever a caller disagreed with him. Rush, on the other hand, is amazingly smooth with his liberal callers and merely quotes facts to shred their case.

Ed used to be a Republican, then he switched over from the dark side:mrgreen:

He's a pretty sensible, likeable guy. Pro-gun too. Before you pre-judge him check him out.

You can stream him on the internet from these links. He's also on Sirius left from 3-6 PM

Do you have a source for that statement or did Ann Coulter tell you?

I don't think the troops want to hear the lefties tell them how bad the war is going and how wrong it is.......I don't think they want to hear their hated for their commander in chief .........

Our soldiers get tons of what is referred to as; "progressive" news...& that would include CNN, & the rest of network news which idolizes anti-American sentiment, accuses our soldiers of war crimes, calls our president a liar & nazi, & promotes "socialism & internationalism"!

I believe Limbaugh is a fair trade off, ..in fact HE can take all of them on & do quite well with one arm tied behind his back!

Limbaugh supports Republicans. If a Republican is behind something, then Limbaugh supports it. You can bet that if a Democrat brought us into Iraq, then Limbaugh would be hell bent against it. Limbaugh is nothing but a blowhard chickenhawk who did everything he possibly could to stay out of the Vietnam War.

Ed Shultz is not some big lefty. He is more of an old "Pro-Labor" Democrat.

So your saying that Rush shouldn't have been on AFN during the Clinton Administration or if a Dem wins the White House in 08?

Troop morale needs to stay high until we can get them home. They have a job to do regardless of politics. They are not allowed to change their minds and go home if they disagree with the mission. Making them disagree with the mission only makes it more difficult for them.

I'd like to know what Ed Shultz was saying that got him cancelled.

In the end, I guess I believe the troops themselves, should decide what they want to hear, is this so difficult to see happen? It seems we are all sitting here trying to decide what these folks should get to hear, and what they shouldn't, and we are not the ones with our asses on the line everyday. Does anyone know if they get to decide this, or have any input at all in to what they hear and watch?

Why would anyone want to listen to a man on hillbilly heroin?

No I saw it said on the floor of the senate on CSPAN during the debate.....

I have no real issue with this move....the reality is, propoganda is a part of war, and anyone who thinks it is only aimed at an enemy....is plainly Naive.

I have listened to Air America on occasion and I don't think our troops want to hear from them how bad things are going in Iraq when they have no clue.......They get enough of that from the liberal media.........

Here's why Ed thinks he got Blackballed, "for calling the staged and rehearsed teleconference with the troops a staged and rehearsed teleconference with the troops."

Do you really think the guys fighting and dying in Iraq want to hear that garbage? Do you think they want to hear the left telling them how bad the war is going when they really know what is happening and the Ed Scultzs of the world have no clue......
