All Department of Defense employees at the US Embassy in Ecuador are being expelled from the country. Beginning in January, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has repeatedly made public statements alleging the US military had infiltrated "all sectors" in the country, and followed through on threats to expel DOD employees on April 7, according to a new document obtained by the Associated Press. The relations between the two countries are already sour due to foreign policy differences and Ecuador's decision to give asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in its London embassy. RT's Ameera David speaks about the Latin American country's move with Larry Birns, director of the Council on Hemispheric Affairs.

Looks like Rafael Correa has followed through on his threats to expel all DOD employees. It seems he wants full sovereignty in his country free from all imperial ambitions. I can applaud this move for a move for national sovereignty.

It's a start. I don't think he's gone far enough. He should boot out all the State Dept. people also because many are CIA. Also, all USAID and NED reps.

Let's look at this from an objective perspective (and not that of the Kremlin mouthpiece RT. If you can find something that isn't full of excrement, do feel free to post). Now, let's begin with your left wing buzz words: sovereignty and imperial. You are implying that the Americans want to take over Ecuador and use it for their own ends, or have already done so.

Let's ask ourselves a couple of questions. Firstly, does the United States currently control Ecuador. If the answer is no, does it want to? If the answer is yes, for what reasons?

Does the US have control over Ecuador? No. Does it control it's economy? No. It does use the US dollar, but this was done on the Ecuadorian government's part a few years before Correa's time during a banking crisis in which the country's currency became worthless. So far, Correa hasn't bothered to change it to something more Ecuadorian on the basis it's a stable currency and doing so would be unnecessarily complicated (and would interfere in his favorite past time of suing media companies that don't tow the government line). With that answer established, does the US want to take over Ecuador? The answer, big surprise here, is no. Partly because Ecuador doesn't possess anything of interest to the US (even it's oil reserves, but they're dwarfed by those of neighboring countries and American oil companies have been pumping oil out of Ecuador since the 70's) and unless all of a sudden, the US thinks what it needs more than anything is shrimp, cut flowers and bananas, nothing that Ecuador currently has in terms of natural resources is what the US really needs (because one of the main reasons for imperialism is to seize and control a country's natural resources). And Ecuador doesn't occupy any important ground.

So, can you explain why exactly do you mean by sovereignty and imperial ambitions, given that Ecuador is currently a sovereign independent state? Or do we think that the presence of an American embassy in a foreign country is tantamount to imperialism? As for the DOD staff, they're probably there trying to flog some cheap equipment off to the Ecuadorians. Because nothing banana republics like doing best is buying nice and shiny new weapons to parade around.
