I was just wondering if anyone has an explanation for the current trend of people voting AGAINST their economic interests. For example, poor people in the Great Plains. These people, the former advocates of radicalism and the former supporters of the old Populist party, have now converted themselves to conservatism. They vote Republican almost religiously every two years, not minding that they are voting agaisnt their economic interests. They continue to vote for the politicians who have a pro-business agenda; they continue to vote for Republicans! So what phenomena can account for all this? Is it simply the ignorance of these people voting for morals over economics? Or is it a case of Republicans successfully brainwashing people? Or is it something else entirely?
