Is it really easier to apply for and obtain welfare/unemployment than it is to get a job? Is the government helping to foster dependency?

It comes down to what takes more effort (and yields a better return) in the long run. Getting a job is only step one - you still have to actually continue to work (including added commuting, tool, clothing and meal costs) at that job to keep getting paid. Getting "help" from the gov't may take as much (or even more) initial effort yet requires far less to keep those checks comming in and, in many cases, may actually pay better. ;)

It's kind of interesting. The economy's in the toilet - it has been and nobody's going to deny that -, so at this point, what few job openings we have are of terrible quality/pay. It's now just a matter of whiter you're willing to start working for a few bucks more than you'll get for free from the government.

I don't know how that could come as news to anybody. With a job you have to actually apply yourself and try.
Unfortunately, that pretty much sums up the reality of life for most of the people on this planet.

"Life is a bitch and then you die."[/B]

Democrats will do anything for votes and power, but up it's especially fun when they can take from the rich and do it.

America is losing its identity as socialism creeps in and destroys our work ethic that made this country strong, very sad to watch.

What are you talking about???? Do you know how much effort it takes to actually get up off the couch and actually go to the unemployment office??? I mean...the new MADDEN is coming out! Some people don't have time for that kind of commitment.

It has nothing to do with socialism. It has to do with predatory capitalism that has shipped jobs overseas, fired workers, and slashed pay, all for higher profits. The problem isn't that welfare is too easy to get. It's that a job that pays enough to live on is too hard to get. It's not a symptom of laziness or anyone being unwilling to work or wanting to abuse welfare. It's a symptom of business decisions that have placed no priority on employing and paying Americans to work.

Regardless of pay you are better off working than being on welfare. Welfare is a dead end while a job of any kind ultimately leads to a better job.

Can't get a job that pays enough? Get more training/education. Otherwise it *IS* your own damn fault. Period.

I agree. Such a shame that there are so few jobs for so many people who want them. And that will continue to get worse while profiteering is the only objective of business.

With what money? Borrow it from your dad? Oh no wait, in this country, we expect a person to go into insane debt in order to get an education, and then they probably don't get a decent job even with their improved credentials.

Oh the horror, one must actually PAY for something in society!!!!

Let me guess, you want government intervention in college level schooling now, eh?

Where would the unemployed go to work? If all benefits were ended tomorrow will someone hire the unemployed the next day? Or maybe the next?

How many "20 something" college graduates are living with mom and dad while flipping burgers part time, hoping for a real job that will support them?

The game is rigged and it's a winner takes all game. It's such a shame that the most ardent supporters of the rigged game are just a few rolls of the dice away from being broke.

Any sane person would. Of course, when you say "government", you mean evil boogeyman that lives only in your dreams. Real people mean "collective action to pay for and organize something that benefits society as a whole and everyone in it". Which is why our system of for-profit education, like our system of for-profit health, for-profit criminal justice, for-profit lawmaking, and generally subordinating the public to the profit of a small ruling class, is driving more and more people into the poor house and keeping them there.

Stop arguing against the imaginary evils and deal with the real world, where people work hard every day, but there's only so much you can do with almost nothing. Stripping people of all their resources doesn't spur creativity and hard work. That's nonsense. It's not a moral imperative to make people poor. It's a failure of our society.

How many 40 year olds whose jobs of 15 years were shipped overseas and have been unemployed for the last several years? How many were downsized in the recession and never re-hired once profits went back up? It's not just young people who are trapped, but the massive proportions of young people who can't obtain economic independence is going to wreak havoc on this country in the coming decade. Nobody my age is both having children and remaining in the middle class. Having a family and a career to support that family are mutually exclusive right now. But that's one of many consequences of our crappy top-down system that's destroying the middle class even more.

There are plenty of low pay low skill jobs that these people on welfare could get if they didn't find it easier to be on welfare and that is proven by the hoards of Mexicans that come here illegally to do them.

Not everyone can have a desk job or "manage" those that do the actual work. How many with ambitions of college see themselves sweating in the sun and actually building/maintaining/repairing something? Most of these folks simply dream of simply watching the hard work of others and getting paid for their "expertise" obtained in a classroom. Reality is that work must be done, holes dug, materials carried by hand and fastened together, wire and pipe installed, things need to be made and repaired - all of these "lowly" jobs are what people see their "free" college education as a way out of actually doing themselves and yet still want them done cheaply, well and without any complaint.

And yet there are dozens, sometimes hundreds, of applicants for each of those jobs. There are not "plenty" of jobs, either high skill or low skill. And the ones there are don't pay enough to allow a person to actually pay for things like rent, further education, or healthcare. This system is not sustainable and it's getting worse. More and more of the middle class is slipping into the poorhouse. If we continue as we are, this country will become a nation of a few ruling rich, and a mass of desperate poor.

You don't know anybody in college, do you? Why sort of weird view of this country do you have where there's a significant portion of the population who doesn't want to do anything? And why do you only seem to understand manual labor as "real" work? What a dim view you're espousing of intellectual labor, which is just as necessary as manual work and likely to become even moreso over time. For every supposedly necessary digger of holes, there are just as many necessary clerks keeping track of the money in the bank. Those kinds of white collar jobs are in the same boat as blue collar ones. Underpaid, overworked, not being offered to young people, and way more applicants than positions. I don't get this weird blue collar vs white collar mentality you have, but it's wrong. Both are in the same boat, and neither is a tier above the other. Both require certain levels of training, and the more difficult jobs require specialized training, and both pay about the same. Some people are suited to some kinds of work, and some people are better suited to others.

Actually, socialist states typically had lower unemployment rates than capitalist countries because they didn't need a reserve labour supply to keep wages down.
Capitalism requires a certain level of unemployment because when there are more people looking for work than jobs available, the more wages are forced down by employers due to competition for those jobs.

The problem is that people get to make such a choice. If they can work, they shouldn't be getting "free money" from the government. That would fix that dilemma.

"Corporate profiteering". I think that phrase is supposed to carry some sort of negative connotation instead of simply being an exercise in stating the obvious. If a corporation is a "for profit" corporation, then it's it's silly to think that it is driven by some other purpose than producing profit. And as long as they're producing goods and services that people want and can deliver them at a price that results in profitability, it's all good. A corporation that is profitable is one that people can sell their own labor to. You can't sell your labor to a corporation that is defunct because it wasn't profitable enough to keep the doors open and keep investors on board.

Everyone's work is worth exactly what they can find someone else to pay for it. It doesn't matter what you do or how much you ask for it as long as you can convince someone that you're services are worth what you are asking. And that's the way it should be. An employer can't be forced to provide "more jobs" or "more pay" just because we want them to. If anyone disagrees with that, just hold up your hand and I'll come along and mow your lawn whether you need it or not and I'll charge you what I want to charge you whether you think it's worth that or not. That's making you hire someone you don't need for a job you don't really need filled and pay them more than you feel their services are worth. Unless you're "down with that", you can't flap your gums about how the government should make corporations hire more people or pay them more - or even bitch about it. At least you can't without demonstrating that when it comes to what's right, you have double standards: what's right for you and your business - and what's right for other people and their business.

If not for welfare many more Americans would take and keep these jobs.

"North Carolina needed 6,500 farm workers. Only 7 Americans stuck it out."

4% unemployment in capitalism is considered to be full employment by economist due to the natural ebb and flow of companies going out of business or laying off workers that soon get another job. Socialist "make work" gov jobs are not true jobs.
