Earnest can't say why WH won't be lit in blue to honor cops | Washington Examiner

President Obama's top spokesman wouldn't say why the Obama administration is rebuffing requests to illuminate the White House in blue to honor police officers gunned down in Dallas and now Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

"I don't anticipate that that is something that we will do," press secretary Josh Earnest answered on Monday when asked if the administration will acquiesce to calls from police departments and others to do so.

nor, at this point would anyone in their right might EXPECT YOU TOO, which is the saddest part of all. that is why this administration nauseates people in one simple headline. that is why we can't wait to see you go. that's why 75% of the country thinks we are going in the WRONG DIRECTION.

Yeah. We don't either.

It will be at halfmast when Bergdhal dies too.

When the flag is at Half mast, it usually Is for paying respect to those who died in a tradgedy.

That could literally be 1,000 different people.

Flying the flag at half mast happens for numerous reasons. I would think that if the White House can be lit in a rainbow in solidarity with the LGBT community for the SCOTUS ruling on SSM, the White House is lit in Pink for Breast Cancer awareness, it was lit in the colors of the French flag following terrorist attacks in France, and we know they have blue lights because in addition to the SCOTUS SSM ruling they lit up in blue for Autism Awareness, then surely it can be lit in blue by the highest ranking law enforcement officer in the nation, The President as laid out in Article II of the US Constitution, in solidarity with his fellow law enforcement officers.

What are his priorities? With whom does he show solidarity and with whom does he refuse to do so? Why would they not given the other times that they have?

How about we make this super simple: No lighting of the White House for anything.

The answer is American traditions are now subject to his interpretation. And the ones he wishes to eliminate will receive 0 recognition.

It's already super simple. The current resident of the WH decides on the lighting - and then lives with the consequences of their decision.

Agreed I think it's stupid. That being said, The White House seems to be lit for great celebration of a milestone in a social cause. That's probably why no blue.

Right. If we do it for one thing and don't do it for another, even if the reasons are legit, somebody's going to get all butt-hurt over it.

You have my vote. Never should have started doing that anyway - someone's always going to get bent out of shape for one reason or another. You can't please everyone all the time - even if you stood on the corner and handed out 100 Dollar Bills, someone would bitch because theirs was wrinkled.

It seems that way at times, and although Obama has been seemingly prolific in that, he isn't the first President to act as such, nor will he be the last.

I have no control of your time. And it is not that stupid when you consider the extremes he went to for this man(?) and what he will not do for the police, who do serve with honor and distinction 99.9% of the time.

The Bergdahl reference was moronic.

These tragedies aren't new, lighting the White House blue would be.

Thousands of officers have been killed in the line of duty, Why now, and not before? Could it be that what you really want is to use the deaths of these officers to make a political statement supporting police against the black lives matter protests? Hmmm...

2016: 66 deaths (31 by gunfire) 120,51 (extrapolated by end of the year)

2013: 123 deaths (31 by gunfire)
2012: 139 deaths (48 by gunfire)
2011: 180 deaths (68 by gunfire)
2010: 177 deaths (59 by gunfire)
2009: 140 deaths (47 by gunfire)

2006: 161 deaths (51 by gunfire)

2004: 166 deaths (56 by gunfire)
2003: 152 deaths (48 by gunfire)
2002: 160 deaths (57 by gunfire)
2001: 242 deaths (65 by gunfire)
from(https://www.odmp.org/search/year)

On average 130 officers have been killed every year under the Obama administration, 46 by gunfire.
Excluding 9/11, an average of 167 officers were killed every year under Bush, 55 by gunfire.

What's nauseating is an inability to see past ones own personal biases and instead look at how otherwise meaningless actions can have extremely detrimental side effects.
  1. Making a point to light the White House blue now, when they have never done it before makes an explicit point that these officers who died are worth more than the thousands of other officers who gave their lives in service
  2. Lighting the White House blue will cause outrage among those who feel wronged by the police. More anger inflames the situation and puts other officers lives at risk.
  3. You would be rightly outraged if the White House ignored the deaths of the police officers and instead focused on the deaths of unarmed black men. Why would you think the converse not be true?
