The police arrested a man after he was seen driving a stolen car. The officers boxed him in and arrested him right then and there.

When he was in the backseat of the car the mystery was solved. He was indeed driving a stolen car, his own car. The car had indeed been reported stolen with the police but some time later the man found his car again and was driving it with his reserve set of keys. BUT BUT BUT BUT, he had failed to notify the police that he had found his car, and was driving it again.

So when police officers spotted the car with the plates of that stolen car, they boxed him in/pulled him over and arrested him. But to cut a short story pleasantly short, when the man had identified himself and the situation was clear, he was relieved of his handcuffs (or in the words of Delete Lawz, the Ironton Grifter, terror cuffs) and was able to continue on his way.

A similar thing has been a problem in the US with rental cars. People have been arrested because the rental car company reported the car stolen then didn't call the police to report the car recovered. Sometimes this happens a year after the car was recovered.

A person whose car was over-insured might report it stolen then set out to write it off (eg rolling it) so it's good to see some disincentive. Insurance fraud isn't treated as seriously as it should be: it costs everyone.

I pay about 40 dollars a month for an all risk insurance for my car. Normal car insurance can be got from about 27 dollars a month.

Insurers reduce fraud by simply not paying out, which costs fraudsters a workable car. But they don't often refer suspected fraud to police, because they don't see any immediate return and it would cost them staff time to testify in court.

Your insurance could be cheaper, but if you're happy I guess that's what matters.

This could never happen in the US. Or, at least the part about "when the man had identified himself and the situation was clear, he was relieved of his handcuffs... and was able to continue on his way." There would be additional charges for obstruction, filing false police reports, or an autopsy, depending on the race of the "defendant".

In the Netherlands when you get caught driving while intoxicated, this often does not lead to arrests. If you are not too much over the limit (tested on a mobile breath analyzing device in a van, just like the ones in police stations). Then the officer calls into the district attorney's office, normally they will impose a fine and a temporary driving ban. Say you are 0.65 when the limit is 0.5, you will get a fine of several hundred dollars and a driving ban of 3 hours or so. Then you are released and you can take a taxi home or sleep the three hours in your car.

BUT if you take off when you are still in the driving ban time, you will get arrested.

Don't forget the beating and perhaps being shot for being a threat to police

I saw a story about this... the innocent car renters are kept in jail for days and face legal issues as the rental company either sticks to the story that the car is still stolen or they are so inept that they can not find the paper work or realize that it was their mistake.

I always love watching the cops... they have the guy on the ground for a bit and then some asshole cops comes flying in and knees the person in the head and starts punching them... got to get in that rage in.

Well, you see, making a mistake is embarrassing and someone has to pay if a police officer feels embarrassed.

Wow, did you think of that silly truism all by yourself?
