As many may have heard over time, the joke goes "Duke is the New Jersey of the South". It's because they have a pretty big enrollment from New York/New Jersey. So...

Here's Duke's student body demographics...

The enrolled student population at Duke University is ~ ...
  • 45.2% White
  • 14% Asian
  • 7.19% Black or African American
  • 5.95% Hispanic or Latino
  • Etc

Here's ~ where the undergrad travel from (the top 5 states)...
Class of 2023
  • 1-North Carolina (only 13% - 16%)
  • 2-California
  • 3-New York
  • 4-Florida
  • 5-New Jersey

Here are the top 5 countries where their students are from (other than the US)...

Home Countries (Class of 2023)
  • 1-China
  • 2-India
  • 3-Korea
  • 4-United Kingdom
  • 5-Canada

So now you know how COVID will travel from specific states/countries to North Carolina (and vice versa).

and here is the demographics of Durham (the city where Duke is located)...

"The racial composition of the city was: 42.45% White, 40.96% Black or African American, 5.07% Asian American, 0.51% Native American, 0.07% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, 8.28% some other race, and 2.66% two or more races; 14.22% were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Non-Hispanic White comprised 37.9% of the population."

come on now. how is Durham gonna stop the spread of COVID in Durham if the Duke students are coming from Jersey, Cali, Florida and New York?

Why would someone from NC pay a fortune to go to Duke when they could pay a modest tuition rate and go to UN-CH which is a damn fine public university.

Duke grads do average a bit higher starting salary.

Now, tuition at UNC for 4 years is around $36,020. At Duke it's $214,000.
