Month-old baby on the Pacific island of Vanuatu becomes first person to get drone-delivered vaccination.

A one-month old baby in the Pacific island of Vanuatu became the first person in history to be given a vaccine delivered commercially by drone on Tuesday.

The drone travelled almost 25 miles to deliver medical equipment to the remote area of Cook's Bay, which is usually only accessible by foot or locally operated boats. Thirteen children and five pregnant women were vaccinated in the area that lacks basic healthcare system.

Talk about living in the boonies. The TV show Survivor did a season on that island some years ago & it looked pretty primordial. You'd expect to see King Kong come out of the jungle at any point.

This is amazing. Yet we cant or wont do this. WTH? Our healthcare system is in shambles and here they are sending vaccines via drone.

I have read that the Mexican narcosmugglers make use of drones to get pot, meth, cocaine & opioids across the U.S. border. These things are so cheap now that after one of these lucrative runs the drone itself becomes disposable.

If they are that remote what diseases do they need vacinating against???

Our healthcare system is not limited by capability, but immorality and bureaucracy. We have all the technology and innovation necessary to accommodate almost everyone in our nation who wants it, but we have an economic system that supports human failings over efficiently distributing resources.

Who knows. As the parent of a child who suffered brain damage due to vaccinations, I find the story pretty horrifying. There are children all over the world who don't get vaccinations who grow up just fine. The notion that vaccines are the saviour fails when faced with the fact that modern technology, sanitation, and education improves disease outcomes way, way more than vaccinations.

They'll spend so much more money and effort to create innovations like this but don't really give a crap about trying to improve the actual living conditions of the people who live there. The infant mortality rate on Vanuatu is pretty abysmal.

There's hepatitis and typhus - food and water borne illnesses. There are also mosquito borne illnesses, some of which can be prevented, though certainly not all. Dengue fever comes to mind as a risk for which there is no preventive other than to avoid bug bites. Good luck with that. I'm sure there are others for which vaccines can be useful, as well.

Same as all of us. It is remote but not remote like the people on that island that killed the missionary. People DO come and go from this one. But apparently the journey takes a long time and they have problems keeping the vaccines cold for the amount of time it takes. The drone solves that problem, apparently.
