A new Oregon law is set to expand local palates by legalizing roadkill consumption. The law permits deer and elk hit by vehicles to be legally salvaged for food, so long as the wannabe-scavenger gets a permit.

Would-be roadkill harvesters must apply for their free "roadkill salvage permit" no more than 24 hours after picking up their cut of street meat, and must submit the heads and antlers of the animals to the Department of Fish and Wildlife within five business days.

Isn't this going to encourage vehicular poaching?

Other than that, we need some sort of law for legally harvesting roadkill in TX. The highway dept no longer cleans the roadway of dead critters..

I'm assuming that they are not apt to send a CSI team out to the alleged roadside kill site to verify the cause and manor of death so this would be a great way to hunt (poach?) year round without acquiring a hunting license and to claim free road kill permits instead to keep the freezer "legally" stocked.

Just think of the potentially huge aftermarket business in up-armoring the grills for big 4x4s. It would be something akin to 'Mad Max' on those lonely Oregon highways as
hungry drivers strive to fill their freezers for the winter.

They really need to do this in PA. The deer are like bloody rats there. A moose bar is a must have.

The only way that would occur is if a person who owns a full size truck modifies the front end to be able to handle the impact of the crash. A bush guard that also protects the headlights, grill etc. Hitting a 100 lb deer at 60 mph will damage the front end of any stock bumper F150, hitting an elk would cause even more. Hitting a moose is a good way to die

Pretty much everyone around these parts has a grill guard. I've also hit a big deer at 75 mph without one...know the effects.
