Dozens of Republican convention delegates are hatching a new plan to block Donald Trump at this summer’s party meetings, in what has become the most organized effort so far to stop the businessman from becoming the GOP nominee. The delegates are angered by Trump’s recent comments on gun control, his racial attacks on a federal judge and his sinking poll numbers. They are convinced that Trump is an insufficiently conservative candidate and believe they will find enough like-minded Republicans within the next month to change party rules and allow delegates to vote for whomever they want, regardless of who won their state caucus or primary.
The new campaign is being run by the only people who can actually make changes to party rules, rather than by pundits and media figures who have been pining for a Trump alternative. Many involved in the delegate-driven movement supported Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas in the primary, but say they have no specific candidate in mind and are not taking cues from any of Trump’s vanquished opponents.
“This literally is an ‘Anybody but Trump’ movement,” said Kendal Unruh, a Republican delegate from Colorado who is leading the campaign. “Nobody has any idea who is going to step in and be the nominee, but we’re not worried about that. We’re just doing that job to make sure that he’s not the face of our party.”

Well another push. Comes during where Trump is sinking in the polls, more and more GOP elected officials are coming out and saying they will not/cannot vote for Trump, and more and more criticism against Trump. We will have to see if this will actually gain more steam. But one thins is for sure, the GOP convention is gonna be a hell of a convention to watch

Good. Democrats should be doing the same thing with their horrible candidate.

This has to be the worst Presidential election of all time.

Dammit, I was hoping this wouldn't break here.

Um... Big difference.

Members of the Democratic Party are rallying behind their canidate.

Republicans on the other hand are doing all they can to avoid being mentioned in same sentence as their canidate.

Question: can they do this? AFAIK the delegate rules regarding bound and unbound are made at the state level BEFORE the state's primary election/caucus.

Yes, I know --- Democrats SHOULD be pissed about Hillary being their candidate. It says a lot about them that they aren't.

I'm not a Democrat anymore, but I'm pissed about $Hillary being the Democratic nominee. She's such a horrible candidate.

Not all Democrats are rallying behind $Hillary, but unfortunately, a whole buch of 'em are.

Why do you suppose Trump is slipping in the polls? I think some of those that resigned themselves to backing Trump are no longer doing so. Can you say political kamikaze? 'Oh, no, there must be decorum in politics even though opponents aren't exhibiting any.'

Some politicians and pundits just aren't too bright.

...but I am delighted that the Democrats have chosen Hillary Clinton. I am anxious to vote for her.

I think she will make a fine president...and her victory will once again show the American conservatives that they are far from being a majority in this country.

As for the title topic...my guess is that Donald Trump may be financing this campaign to PUSH him off the ticket. The Republicans are going to lose no matter what...and I seriously doubt Donald Trump wants to be president...or to suffer a humiliating defeat. This way, he will be PUSHED OUT...and when the Republicans lose, he will rage through the media that the PUSH was the reason they lost.

He gets even more publicity...which is what he really is looking for.

He has got a WIN/WIN situation going for him.

The Republicans, by the way, deserve everything coming their way this election. They begged for it.

I believe a week or so before each party's conventions the convention committees convene and decide on the specific rules for *that* convention, and they essentially can make any rules they so desire!

Their only constraints being credibility and political wherewithal.

That's my current understanding.

It would certainly be nice, if they came up with a plausible alternative to that woman.

You know, that's a novel and interesting postulate.

I'm not sure I agree, but thanks for throwing that out there.

BTW - I'm 'anxious' about Hillary too, though not in the same way as you.

The Republicans, by the way, deserve everything coming their way this election. They begged for it.
You got that right!

This couldn't happen to a more deserved bunch!

I am aware they do that. However, the rules they are talking about changing (bound delegates) are set by each individual state with at least some being state law.

First of all...thank you for your comments of agreement with my post.

I think you have got this correct about convention rules. Each party's rules committee can pretty much make any rules they want...but, as you noted, they have to be careful not to alienate their base with any they make.

As I see it...they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Trump as their candidate is a sure recipe for defeat; "cheating" Trump out of the nomination by the rules committee is a sure recipe for defeat.

I guess I should not be counting chickens while they are still eggs...and I never want to under estimate an opponent. But as Oliver Hardy would say:

But there's no need for the convention committee to be involved with the state delegates to effect a change at the convention level; they can rule on how the accept the delegates.

For example: If Trump gets 1500 delegates, they can require 1600 on the first vote, and open convention after that.

The above is an unlikely & extreme example, but I'm sure there's many things in the details that they can skew to their advantage.

This of course from my place of being on the outside looking in ...

I rather expected something like this. It was a question of whom and how much.

There is no one issue, but calling out a judge more or less pinpointed Trump's major deficit; he's a loose cannon, spewing vile because of his thin skin. This and the accumulation of other asinine outrages are having an impact.

Also, as the polls shed support like a dog in spring, Hillary is rising, making the upper crust of the party very nervous.

The push back however might swing support back to Trump as he plays the victim card so well. It will depend who comes out, who abandons him and when.

I also think the Democrats have something serious on him and are, or course, waiting till close to the election to spring it. In any event, the anxiety level within the Republican ranks is far higher than among Democrats.

In closing, I have said since the results of 2012 that this presidential election was the Republicans was their's to lose; it appears they're headed that way.

Hmmm, interesting. Hadn't considered that approach. Because they really can't change how the bound delegates behave.

Alongside rules created by the Republican National Committee and the Republican National Convention Rules Committee, individual state Republican parties—and, in some cases, the states themselves—also have rules and guidelines for delegates to the 2016 Republican National Convention. In fact, state-level regulations generally determine how delegates are elected, whether or not delegates are bound to specific candidates, and under what circumstances a delegate is to remain bound to a candidate. This page provides a list of known rules and guidelines for delegates from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and the five U.S. territories. It also features a map and table that lay out the binding rules for delegates in each state and Washington, D.C., according to state party regulations and state election laws.

What you propose would maybe work.

I agree.

It might be argued that Trump dug such a deep hole for himself in the primary with his plethora of objectionable statements & positions, that he could not survive the general. But it does seem his comments concerning Judge Curiel were the coup de grace.

Another poster here (haymarket) once remarked to me that he'd been told the DNC has been readying a barrage of attack ads against Trump like never seen before, that no candidate could survive.

Now obviously he was stating this in terms of a conventional race, and we know Mr. Trump is *not* a conventional candidate!

But, I believe there will be truth here as to the efficacy of the DNC attack ads. I think they will be horrendous & damning, using him and his own words.

Trump's mouth is his greatest asset, as well as his own worst enemy.

The other shoe has yet to drop. We all know Hillary has crafted a significant oppo research and reveal plan - it's already been hacked. What we don't know is what Trump is holding on Hillary.

There's no doubt.

But I believe Trump's more vulnerable due to him never having been politically vetted, and Hillary being pretty well vetted. I doubt there's much on HRC we haven't yet seen, but Trump may be superlative in presenting it or may simply make things up (like his Birther attacks on the President).

So yeah I guess, since we haven't ever seen what Trump is capable of producing; he might take attack ads to a whole new level.

The only hope for the GOP is for Hillary to be arrested or be physically incapacitated...and even then, such would have to happen before the convention, before she officially declares a running mate who could easily pick up the general campaign ball and run with it.
