Donald Trump Would Push Debt To Highest Level In U.S. History, Report Says
Donald Trump Would Push Debt To Highest Level In U.S. History, Report Says Donald Trump Would Push Debt to Highest Level In U.S. History, Report Says

Donald Trump’s policy agenda would quickly push the national debt to its highest level in history, according to a new report.

The analysis, which the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget published Sunday evening, represents one of the first serious efforts to assess how electing Trump or his chief rival for the presidency, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, might affect federal finances over time. Rather than focusing on individual policy initiatives — like Trump’s call to abolish the estate tax, or Clinton’s pledge to help working parents pay for child care — this new analysis takes into account all of the candidates’ proposals to date, in order to assess how they would alter the federal budget and, ultimately, the amount of debt that the public holds.

The resulting contrast was stark. As the report demonstrates, the election doesn’t simply present Americans with a choice between a politician who disparages entire ethnic and religious groups and a politician who preaches the virtues of diversity. It also offers a choice between a candidate who’d create vast new deficits for the sake of some highly questionable tax cuts — and one proposing a more modest agenda of expanded government programs, with added revenue that would cover nearly all of their cost............................

Some estimates are as high as $20 trillion dollars of debt..........Did you know that is what you are voting for?

Re: Donald Trump Would Push Debt To Highest Level In U.S. History, Report Says Donald

I'm not so sure how non partisan that report is, considering Barack Obama has increased the debt more than double that of Bush(closer to triple), and she is calling for the same policies with even more spending! How exactly does that compute to a balanced budget?

So...continue the trend we've been on for many years now? Show me a President that has actually reduced the national debt.

Trumpettes think he will just write a check for it.

So Huffpo publishes a "study" from some supposedly non partisan source, showing colored lines with absolutely no backup or citations, then finishes the story with:

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Sorry, you need more than that if it's presented as anything more than an unfounded hit piece.

What, a report about the cost of Trump's campaign platform is suspect because Obama?
Yeesh.

*shrug*....continuation of trends and all that. That aside, predictions are speculation.

Re: Donald Trump Would Push Debt To Highest Level In U.S. History, Report Says Donald

Hmm...for the past 7 1/2 years all we've heard from liberals is that the debt doesn't actually matter and that its actually a good thing to have debt. Now we have a thread, posted by and agreed to by liberals, complaining about just how much Trump is predicted to raise the debt vs Hillary and Hillary's numbers are considered "good" and Trump's numbers are considered "bad".

Not that this actually surprises me. The same happened in reverse during the Bush years. But it IS funny to see the hypocrisy.

You beat me to it! Not only have liberals spent the last 7 1/2 years arguing how debt is a good thing, they have blamed austerity for all the worlds woes. And from the looks of the graph, Hillary can add champion of austerity to her list of right wing tendencies that include cozying up to big banks and neo-con warhawishness. So if liberals are honest :)lamo) Trump should see his support among democrats rise dramatically.

And for the last 7 years we've heard from Republican fiscal conservatives how bad the debt is and how they want smaller government and less spending.

But with Bush(as you pointed out), and now Trump spending less and the debt doesn't matter?

The hypocrisy easily goes both ways.

Three things. 1) Neither this thread, nor the article in HUffPo were of republican origin. 2) Republicans are not defending his spending 3)Trump is a New York liberal.

I agree with # 3.

The other 2? I disagree. I saw 8 years of Republicans sitting on the hands and even cheering while Bush grew the government like never before, but then those same Republicans went nuts as soon as there was a D in the WH.

Like I said. Hypocrisy on both sides.

Bout to say unless the deficit was completely eliminated and we hit a surplus, every president would break records on debt, since we already have record debt, and dollar more than what we take in is another record breaker, has been true since ww2.

Re: Donald Trump Would Push Debt To Highest Level In U.S. History, Report Says Donald

Our debt's already the highest it's ever been, and it gets higher every minute. I don't think it's mathematically possible for our next President to leave office with the debt lower than when they got in. At least not with the two major candidates in this cycle.

I agree.

As they point out, Trump hasn't gone to a great deal of detail in describing his policy proposals. There are a lot of assumptions in their analysis and i haven't looked at how valid they might be.

Going into debt to make poor people more productive is a worthwhile investment. I generally encourage educational and social investment in average Americans.

Going into debt to effectively give rich people pay raises (through tax cuts) doesn't help our economy much, if at all, doesn't help our country, and it doesn't help average Americans- in fact, it often hurts them, because that budgetary pressure is often used to cut social programs.

HuffPo linked to the complete report with all the back ups and citations one would need. Enjoy.

There's an area of DP where this belongs.

This area specializes in, "Partisian hackery so bad it gets buried with the cat poop".

Go look at Jonathan Cohn's Twitter page, most of it is devoted to calling Trump a poopy pants.
