It has to do with a large demographic of the country feeling threatened and under siege in all sorts of ways- economically, culturally, demographically- in an age of relentlessly increasing globalization, modernization, secularization, and pluralism. I think until such real roots of the problem are understood, and addressed with real sympathy and care, it will continue to manifest itself in all sorts of pathological ways.
