This lecture on pre WWII history of the Soviet Union was given several years ago at the University of Toronto by Professor Jordan Peterson. This was long before he was thrust into the public spotlight over the Canadian law mandating people use a persons preferred gender pronouns. It was titled "The Dangers of Victimhood That Leads to Genocide" by the creator of this animated version of his lecture, where Peterson talks about how the communists created a victimhood mentality and turned people against the Kulaks, and the results that followed which led to the death of millions of people.

This lecture is NOT POLITICAL at all. It's a lecture on human behavior given to phycology students based on what took place in the USSR in the 1920's and 1930's, and seems to have many parallels to what we're seeing take place in American society today. It truly scares the hell out of me. Watch it yourself and let me know what you think.

.

Watch it yourself and let me know what you think.
I watched it. As an abstract treatise on the psychology of victim-hood it might be noteworthy but, as expected, while it cites the Soviets, it offers no real distinction between the victim-hood of the left, or the victim-hood of the right. The rise of fascism in Europe was predicated on exactly the same claims of victim-hood as the old Soviet Union, and the slaughter and starvation perpetrated by Nazi-ism was no less unjust than exile to Siberia. Germany claimed they were victims of the successful Jews in business and banking, built gas chambers as a solution to their problems of being victims, and the images from those camps are eerily similar to the ones depicted in the video.

The wealthiest people in this country are not 200 times as productive. They aren't 200 times as talented. They're not 200 times as educated. They are not 200 times as creative. They aren't 200 times as intelligent. They don't work 200 times as many hours in a week as the working poor do. And yet they not only make 200 times more money, they make TWO THOUSAND TIMES AS MUCH MONEY!

We've reached the point where the distance between the "haves" and the "have nots" is so obscenely vast, 90% of the population are effectively victims of the wealthiest 10%.

You say that it offers no real distinction between the left and right when it comes to oppression and I agree, and at the same time disagree. He never verbally states a distinction because as I stated in my op, the lecture is not a political one, but one on human nature and what can happen and has happened when a government allows and/or perpetuates a victimhood narrative to take root in their society. He could have easily used Germany during WWII as an example of how victimhood kills, because It played out exactly the same way there as it did in the USSR with millions of dead Jews and various other people. So I agree with you there, but where I disagree with you is that although it is never presented by Professor Peterson from a political or ideological perspective, the reasons used to create the hatred and perpetuate the victimhood that lead to millions of deaths, makes it clears what side this parallels in the United States today.

What politicians and talking heads have been telling people for several years now that they've been unfairly treated, discriminated against, and oppressed? Is it democrats and the left, or republicans and the right?

You just answered my previous question with the argument above. You are clearly making a distinction between the have and have nots, or rather, the oppressors and the oppressed.

That class victimhood argument has been made for decades and the reason it's never worked is because it isn't a valid comparison. In the USSR and China the "have and have nots" argument had more teeth because the have nots truly had nothing. Here in the US it's actually "the haves and the have mores". Even those in the lower class financially in the US still have food, shelter and clothing, cell phones, TVs, internet access, refrigerators, microwaves, etc...

That's why the class victimhood argument has taken a back seat to the race victimhood argument in the last several years. What's changed is that for the first time, those who stoke the flames of racial division and victimhood have managed to gain enough support from the right people, to successfully enact punishment/revenge on those they have painted as the oppressors with their "cancel culture" tactics.

I hear nothing but talks of victim-hood from the right. The poor whining babies pay a smaller % in taxes than any other developed 1st world nation, but it's too damned much for the services rendered that support the underclasses. They'd much rather build more prisons, have bigger police forces, have more homeless people in the streets, and suffer more untreated head cases with guns, because social services means "socialism". They're all victims of "those god damn librulz". The idiots are all perfectly fine with taking less from the people who actually need it the least.

I feel so sorry for them . . . . .
not.

And this is just bullshit - unless you were born yesterday, in which case your revisionist history makes 'perfect sense'. But I wasn't born yesterday, and when I first entered the job market over 50 years ago, the heads of corporations made a fraction of what they now do - in fact, less then 1/10th as much. Unions were stronger and their members had the buying power to raise a family on a single income, purchase a home, and put their kids through college. Antitrust legislation was alive and well, and the tax rate for the wealthiest Americans was 90%. As recently as 1981, estate taxes were 70% for anything over $175,000. Now it's only 37% of everything over $11,400,000. You do the math. It's structured to create a permanent ruling class - precisely what the founding fathers rejected in principle, and warned us against.

The only class warfare I've seen since Reagan has been the war against the poor by the rich, who've amassed so much disposable income, they can buy our politicians and write their own legislation that effectively impoverishes the bulk of the middle class. I guess the phrase "wage stagflation" has somehow eluded you for the last 3 generations. Don't talk to me about what is "a valid comparison".

I'm sorry, but it's the left and democrats who've been peddling victimhood, not the right. What happened in the USSR, China and yes, even Germany, was due to one group of people being convinced (with the aid of government propaganda) that all their problems were due to another group of people that were victimizing them. Republicans don't claim their victims of over taxation, or anything else for that matter.

In the USSR they claimed the Kulaks (successful peasant farmers) were to blame for the other peasant farmers not being as successful, leading not only to the Kulaks losing their farms and their possessions, but their lives as they were shipped to Siberia to work until they died. It also resulted in the state taking over all the farming, which lead to the deaths of millions of people, including the so called "victims" who rose up against the Kulaks in the first place. In Germany it was the government convincing the people through racist propaganda that the Jews were responsible for white Germans being poor and not prospering, and we all know how that ended. I won't get into what Mao did in China, but as you probably know, the rural farmers were made scape goats for the failure of the Great Leap Forward which resulted in an estimated 45 million dead.

The democrats and their far left progressives supporters are traveling down a very dangerous path playing their identity politics/victimhood game... The very same path that Stalin, Mao and Hitler traveled that resulted in more than 60 million people dead.

Here are some poor widdle victims: their favorite politician lost an election, Awwww…. So cute and innocent. Being all oppressed by those meany lefties like that. Your heart bleeds for them:

Here are good and fine little folks who are being oppressed even some more:

Nope, no victimhood here. Just fine folks fighting for their rights from getting trampled on by those meanie lefties….🤣

It isn't bullshit, it's fact. You and others just like you have tried to convince the working class in America that they have been victimized by rich and they are to blame for all their problems. You all want to tare down the entire American system by starting a revolution, but you have never gotten anywhere close to the support you need to accomplish it because most people in the working class are getting by just fine and don't hate people for being successful.

People like you pushing the class warfare narrative aren't the ones who scare me... It's your brothers and sisters using identity politics to divide the country by convincing every minority and marginalized group in America that they are the victims of a system designed by white people, for the benefit of white people, and that they will never prosper until they are removed from power and the country is rebuilt from the ground up. Just as you, they want a revolution and have already taken several first steps. They allowed months and months of race-based riots to take place in cities around the country that they could have easily stopped, while at the same time trying to convince the public that Jan 6th was an attempt to overthrow the government.. They are allowing the free flow of illegal immigrants into the country, which include drug runners and human smugglers. They are releasing dangerous and violent criminals from jail, and refusing to prosecute a whole host of criminal offenders. They are allowing the homeless to take over cities and permitting them to use drugs openly and harass law abiding people.

The left are actively targeting anyone who doesn't agree with them. They want their enemies (conservatives, republicans, white people and dissenters) silenced, financially destroyed, and ostracized from society. This is the beginning stages of history repeating itself and it needs to be stopped before the country is destroyed.

And don't forget the poor little victims that tore through cities like Portland, burning and killing as they pleased. With all the support they could ever want from poor little victims like yourself.

Yeah, good job coming into a discussion that didn't even involve Trump and using it as a means to once again cry about him... you people are so one note at this point, that it's a waste.

I find this discussion ironic given that the only reason trump got elected is due to conservatives perception of being victims and wanting someone who will strike back.

Did you listen to the lecture, or are you just here to derail the thread?

Yes- the lecture seems to explain Charlottesville, 1/6, and all the desire to “own the libs” at any cost perfectly.

They were not out to overthrow the US government in a desperate attempt to install a dangerous, corrupt, strongman to protect them against those meanie “libtards” protesting police brutality.

It's what the GOP is all about these days.

Republicans don't claim their victims of over taxation, or anything else for that matter.
That's a LIE! Of course they do. Anyone who's had their eyes open over the past 40 years would get the impression that Republicans believed that every single problem in the country could be corrected by tax cuts. They've even pledged allegiance to a tax cut guru named Grover Norquist that is taken more seriously by them than their oath to the US Constitution. If that fact has somehow alluded your attention, then I have to suspect you really were born yesterday.
The democrats and their far left progressives supporters are traveling down a very dangerous path playing their identity politics/victimhood game... The very same path that Stalin, Mao and Hitler traveled that resulted in more than 60 million people dead.
It is the proto-fascists on the right that are traveling down a very dangerous path with their victim-hood game, and there's no more salient example than their full-throated support for the anti-democratic, would-be-dictator Trump, whose post-election-loss antics have finally come back to bite them in the ass, by exposing Republicans for what they really are. Traitors!

This is Republican orthodoxy now. E.g., see Trump's 2016 RNC convention speech:

A number of these reforms that I will outline tonight will be opposed by some of our nation’s most powerful special interests. That is because these interests have rigged our political and economic system for their exclusive benefit. Believe me it’s for their benefit. Big business, elite media and major donors are lining up behind the campaign of my opponent because they know she will keep our rigged system in place. They are throwing money at her because they have total control over everything she does. She is their puppet, and they pull the strings.

Do you not understand the difference between supporting or opposing certain government policies, and victimhood? When you attempt to convince one race that they are being oppressed and discriminated against by another, or attempt to convince people that they are being screwed by the wealthy and they are responsible for their lack of success, that creates the victimhood that led to 10's of millions of deaths in the USSR, Germany and China. The progressive left embraces the doctrine that the American system is centered around benefitting white people and oppresses blacks and other minorities.

That is just projection and has no basis in reality, and I can prove it.

Narrative: Police are racist and kill unarmed black people.
Is it true? There is no evidence to support that narrative and the statistics don't support that narrative.
Action taken: Hundreds of violent and destructive riots in dozens of cities that did billions in damage and accounted for dozens of deaths.
Political reaction: Democrats allowed these riots to happen for many months, wouldn't allow police stop them, refused assistance offered by the federal government to stop them, and many raised money to bail out any of the rioters who were taken to jail. When an incident took place involving police killing a black person that was found not to be racist and was found to have been a justified use of force, the democrats ignored those findings and either continued to perpetuate the lie, or said nothing and allowed the lie to continue to be propagated by others.

The democrats and the progressive left are actively engaging in the creation of a victimhood narrative and have already begun engaging in, encouraging, and/or endorsing, retaliatory measures being taken to silence, punish and ostracize those they have labeled the victimizers, which includes anyone who is white. Anyone who objects to what they are doing, or objects to their political policies or proposals is immediately labeled a "White Supremacism" or an "Uncle Tom" if they happen to be black. They have taken what is, and always has been, simple political disagreement and falsely portrayed it to the black community as blatant racism in an effort to solidify the victimhood narrative they are pushing. That narrative goes hand in hand with teachers using CRT to indoctrinate school children.

Many of you cite Jan 6th or Charlottesville as if it's some kind of equivalent, but that completely falls flat. The differences are, that both of those events were denounced by republicans and not allowed to be repeated. The police were allowed to do their jobs, people were arrested, and people are actively being prosecuted. There weren't any republicans or right wing pundits coming out in support for those incidents or for the people who engaged in them. Republicans and those on the right are not trying to convince white people that they are being victimized by minorities and those on the political left, they're not trying to paint them as racists, and they are not trying to silence their voices, punish them, or have them ostracized from society.

Republicans and those on the right still address and portray publicly the current differences as political, while democrats and those on the left portray the differences as being racial and an issue of minority oppression.

Of course you did... It's all you can do since recognizing or acknowledging what's going on is not an option for you.
Now you're making my argument. You're in total denial about the victim-hood of the right-wing-nuts in the Republican Party, and no doubt had your earplugs in, when you slept right through the bitching and moaning of the astro-turf Tea Party movement that put so many GOP Party members into Congress. More's the pity, Van Winkle.

Here's hoping you wake up.
