When David Plouffe, President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign manager, wrote recently that his former boss was "not concerned with his re-election", there was predictable scepticism.
After all, it has long been a truism that every politician wants to cling to power and a reality that presidential campaigns are planned years in advance. Pronouncements about not looking at polls and concentrating on getting things done are, moreover, standard fare from poll-driven, election-obsessed politicians and their apparatchiks.

In this case, however, Plouffe may inadvertently be onto something. Almost everything Obama does these days suggests that he doesn't care much about being re-elected. Strange as it might seem, perhaps he wants to be a one-term president.
Obama was elected in 2008 at an extraordinary moment in American politics. Suddenly, this charismatic figure, elected to the Senate without serious opposition in 2004 and without any executive experience, was catapulted into the White House.
His presidential bid had been based on the power of his life story and his ability with the spoken word. Doubtless he was as surprised as anyone else that he pulled it off. Governing has been altogether more difficult for him and there are signs he is already tiring of it.

Does Barack Obama want to be re-elected in 2012? - Telegraph

Hmmm....Interesting question. What do you all think? Does he? Or is he going to be content just screwing everything up and leaving? And what does this do to future African American's that may want to run in the future?

He might.

Or is he going to be content just screwing everything up and leaving?

Last time I checked the country was still standing, and the superbowl is still scheduled for next year. Try again.

And what does this do to future African American's that may want to run in the future?

What do you mean "What does it do for African Americans"?

Yep, guess if Obama screws up every black president will be thought of that way... is that what you're implying?

reminds me of a time when I work at a hospital. We did transplants on two patients. One white. One black. Both jerks. The white was recognized by staff as an individual jerk. The black represented his race. Irritated me to no end.

I've always thought of him as a guy with long term goals. I'm assuming he would want to be in office when the health care bill goes into full effect. Also, what politician doesn't want to be re-elected?

This happens all the time where I live. It's super annoying.

He's got a long way to go before he screws things up as bad as his predecessor. I hope he runs again as it will take another four years to clean up the mess Dumbya left. Two wars, near depression, deficit spending up the yahoo by the repubs the previous two terms, etc. etc.

Oh so that is the indicator now? If things are still standing? If he hasn't destroyed buildings then he was a success? Wow!

Oh, Did ya see this one?

Viva la stimulus!

I heard it from a liberal commentator on XM Left. She was making the point that Obama hated black people. I thought it was stunning.

You might be a partisan if your opening post presupposes general agreement on the contestable merits of a public figure.

Barack Obama will probably seek a second term.

The trillon dollars being flushed down the toilet in bum **** Eqypt Iraq and Afghanistan could have taken care of a lot of our infrastructure problems. I love how you righties whine about the stimulus money -- that was spent here btw-- but have amnesia when it comes to run away spending in countries that don't even want us there.

Well, as long as he has his loyal psychophants constantly blaming Bush for everything, I guess you'd be right, if only America was that stupid huh?

I can hear it now....Imagine, it's 2015, Obama is nearing the end of his second term (provided he runs for one and wins) America is in depression, half the country is unemployed, city's and states are bankrupt, hyperinflation has occurred and a loaf of bread now costs $7.50 + $3.00 in aggregated new taxes. We are now debating stimulus number 10 at a cost of some $10 trillion dollars that we are just going to print the money for yet again, and a faint voice in the backround will still say, "That damned Bush, if he hadn't spent $500 million on a war we wouldn't be in this mess." ...... Really?

I doubt this scenario would happen though so.....

My hope is for a change of President in the White House in 2012.

:lamo You doubt it? Not outright dismiss it, just a doubt......? uh, follow along Star...it's a hypothetical to show the absurdness of continually blaming the preceding President for the screw ups of this one. GAWD! I didn't say this will happen....Gheeze.

I forget why I came to this same conclusion, but it's been a while now. I really think he has no interest in running again. To me that makes him more frightening than ever. I don't think he considers what he is doing, as screwing things up. I think his agenda is to collapse our "capitalistic" society and replace it with socialism which will gradually lead us to communism.
There's a chance he may swing to the center after Nov. to maybe get re-elected but I think it's more likely he will keep doubling down on the things he's doing now.

I mean if it sounds like the usual <expletive-deleted> I read here, I don't know how you were supposed to know this was a "just joshin!!" moment.

Thanks Barb, And to that point, if that is the case, Cloward and Piven strategy comes to mind, doesn't that make the lame duck session really dangerous, and further, how are we going to put a stop to these capitalist killing laws he has enacted?

maybe not full blown Communism, but he certainly doesn't respect free markets either does he now?

It might cause voters to take pause if it's a black dem who wasn't vetted. Hopefully we won't make the same mistake again. Not, the skin color, but the vetting part. He got a total pass from the media.

what a cute play on words. btw...america was pretty ****ing stupid in 2000 and 2004, so we can hope, huh?

Well...since you are totally derailing the topic...while you are bull****tin you MIGHT want to consider that MOST of that moeny we spent on both wars goes back into the American economy in the form of salaries, war supplies, equipment, etc being made by Americans. So...if you like stimulus plans...

The democrats have ADDED 4 TRILLION to the nation debt in under 2 years. The DEMOCRATS have had control of the purse strings in BOTH the house AND the senate for FOUR years now...

so...if you were to set your myopic and idiotic partisanship aside, you MIGHT realize BOTH parties have ALWAYS done their fair share of screwing things up.

Oh...and just out of curiosity...how much have we spent on Clintons war in Serbia? To date?

So it would be stupid in your words and thought for America to pause in the face of ever increasing debt, massive spending, and the Fed recently saying that they were ready to monetize the debt, and consider a different path to that of Dear Leader?

j-mac

What do you mean by free market? There are varying degrees of a free market. A completely laissez faire market would have nothing illegal, and no regulation. That means any drug, prostitution, slavery would be legal. There would be no taxation, which means no military, or any other government program. A completely free market is not a good thing IMO. There has to be regulation to keep people safe, and to prevent people from taking advantage of the system.
