I know the answer is "no"

We are not famous at all abroad but we have plenty of small music groups, mainly rock / alternative-rock.

This one is 25 years old, its a kind of industrial rock I think, but its great if you want to wake up

To fully appreciate the melody of this one, you have to be drunk and listen very very loud (be careful its rude). They are only 2. The rythm is made on a computer, and the electronic effect are made by the guy on live.
Soldout (clic on "music" (in pink on the left) and place your cursor on the titles. Listen to the first one!)
They played at my school 2 years ago, and in December they were in New York!

You won't understand the lyrics of this one, but I hope you'll appreciate the melody.

I love this one. The lyrics are not in French but in Spanish. It was Nr.1 in 1999 here, Nr.4 in France, but I think it's unknown abroad.

This one is a kind of mix of other songs.

I have a question about the music scene in Belgium. I know that the Belgians love jazz and have done much to further the performance and the history of this music. Several years ago a friend of mine told me that jazz clubs in Belgium were subsidized by the Belgian government. That was in the 70's. Is that true?

I play in a music band, and yes, as artists, we get subsidies (from the minister of culture).

They subsidy the creation and diffusion of litterature, music, theatre, cinema, dance...everything that is linked to culture.

Thank you for the information. One of my favorite jazz perforems of all time lives or used to live in Belgium. Saxophonist Johnny Griffen. Are you a fan of Jazz music'

It is amazing that in Belgium Jazz is supported by government subsidy and in America to get money for Jazz is very difficult. What a pardox. Both Jazz and blues are IMO too neglected in the US. These are truly cultural treasures that should get support form the NEA but they are at the bottom of the list.

As I told you I play the saxophone so I use to play jazz. But I enjoy every kind of music*, I like Duran Duran, Kiss, OMD, Toto...

The saxophone has been invented in a town over here, Dinant, and they are so proud that they make contests every year. In 2002, there was a concerto with 1312 saxophones!
Adolphe Sax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I love Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington!!!

And that must have been so cool to hear the american jazz groups of the 20's...

*Rap is not music

This one is funny:

Sttellla* - On a rien de moins que les Américains ("we have nothing less than the Americans")

(* Stella is a famous brand of beer)

YouTube - Sttella - Les Américains

They have got California, but we've got Annie Cordy (a singer)
They had got the Watergate, we've got Waterzooi
They have got Manhattan, but we've got Schuman's traffic circle
It's true they have Hollywood, but we have Knokke le Zoutte

...

not very clever (and not nationalist, don't worry, it's humorous), but the comment about this song by the singer is great:

Aaaah...if there were 900 millions of Belgians, everything would be different. We'd see the Atomium in every movie, we could invade the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Westerns would be called Westende, J. F. K would have been assassinated in Florenville, the Statue of Liberty would take a pi and we'd have a huge list of fabulous TV-series: "2 Belgian Fries in Miami", " Aywaille, State Police", " Zatman ", " La rue de Saint Francis à Coo " ("St Francis street in Coo", sounds like San Francisco in French), " The Experts Messancy " etc… etc… It's only a dream, but if we wanted to be 900 Millions, each of us would have to get at least 90 kids! That's a lot!

I prefer the Mormon Tabernacle Choir doing Jimi Hendrix greatest hits.

....Depeche Mode, OMD,....

I grew up on these and their genre (The Smiths, Morrissey, Erasure, etc.). My favorite band to this day is still Depeche Mode. A British band with a French name......yes, I get the irony.

Front 242 was Belgian? All those nights in the very late 80s/early 90s underground clubs listening to the music and trying to pick up girls, I had no idea the soundtrack was Belgian. I haven't even heard of them in years.

It wasn't my favourite type of music, but it fit perfectly the time and place of my formative years. I'll always have a soft spot for it.

I enjoy the music of César Franck.
