Sorry bout that,

1. Does some webmasters have the power to trace users who post on their sites?
2. Can they call you with a fax machine and disconnect you from their site while verifying your identity?
3. Is this a form of wire tapping, if its proven to be true?
4. Is it illegal, if the webmasters do this?
5. Can by getting a person ip, are they able to get your phone number too? Then find out what your name is?

Yes...anyone with the knowledge (and a few good programs) can find out who you are with relative ease. If this information is used to Damage an individual it can be deemed Illegal, based on existing Civil Protection Laws. Identity theft is a prime example, though it is the most blatant form of abuse it is definately not the only way to hurt someone with this information. Access to the Data is only limited by the knowledge one has, and the motivation to use it for protection.

They all do.

2. Can they call you with a fax machine and disconnect you from their site while verifying your identity?

Uhm... no. If they had the phone number of your fax machine, they could send you a fax, and they can block your IP from their site, but the two don't really have anything to do with each other.

3. Is this a form of wire tapping, if its proven to be true?

No. It has nothing to do with monitoring your phone. Everything they can do involves information that is sent directly to them by your computer-- which is necessary for you to use the Internet.

4. Is it illegal, if the webmasters do this?

No.

5. Can by getting a person ip, are they able to get your phone number too? Then find out what your name is?

Sometimes. It depends on how much information your service provider stores, and how much they allow other people to see. Linking your IP to your phone number is relatively common, and linking it to your name happens occasionally.

If they can't get your name directly from your ISP, they probably can't get it from your phone number unless they have access to phone company records or a reverse directory.

That *protection* can go both ways. There are several anonymous proxies that are unwelcome here. Simply because of buttheads that utilized them we did not want them to return.

1. Does some webmasters have the power to trace users who post on their sites?
Yes, it can be used as a tool to get advertising bucks and help find out how to create a webpage with a better atmosphere. Hasn't worked very good here - yet. LOL

Google analytics can now show me the most popular of the site. For instance, did you realize that religion & philosophy has the most visitors? While the polls forum has the most posts. Kinda interesting I thought. Another even more interesting tidbit - people are less likely to sign up if they click on the "sex & sexuality" forum their first visit here...

This tool does not show me names or locations - very broad demographics. No worries.

2. Can they call you with a fax machine and disconnect you from their site while verifying your identity?
Fax is Zmodem not TCP/IP protocal.
It would be like kicking a 34 yard fieldgoal with a toothbrush.

3. Is this a form of wire tapping, if its proven to be true?
Nope. This is private property. We also have a privacy statement - see bottum right.
4. Is it illegal, if the webmasters do this?
Nope, but always always take a look at the privacy statement (if there is one). If not, leave. There could be things on the site that can be harmful to your computer.
5. Can by getting a person ip, are they able to get your phone number too? Then find out what your name is?
Yes. By knowing your IP I can tell you where you live, cross reference that with a few other tools and get much info about you. IP address info here is private and available to the mod team for emergencies only - hacks, security issues, threats of bodily injury etc... something we need to get the DHS involved with.

I have only had to utilize that once - it was fun as the user attempted to go through 2 anonymous proxies before surfing this site and actually paid $13 a month to be anonymous to some website only to find out it was worthless to him. He is no longer around (I believe).

On one, the slightest perversion from the 'norm' is attacked and debated.
On the other, it's practically a requirement;)
