The Democratic National Committee announced Friday that there will be no donor threshold for its upcoming Nevada debate, opening the door for former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to qualify for his first contest.

Bloomberg has yet to qualify for the Nevada debate, but his omnipresence on cable and local television airwaves has helped boost his national poll numbers in recent weeks

DNC changes debate rules, opening the door for Bloomberg

Fox News is reporting that Bernie Sanders is quite upset about this. Once again the DNC is changing the rules to screw Bernie. Others are crying foul as well.

"It's a mistake for @TheDemocrats to change the rules for debates in the middle of this race to yield to a billionaire. We need to respect the grassroots movement leading this party forward,"SY Lee, Yang's national press secretary, tweeted."

I can't say I am disappointed by the infighting in the Democratic primaries.

I think this is a great decision by DNC!

It makes no sense for Bloomberg to be shut out of debates when he is polling so well.

P.S. On a side note, with Biden having (made-up-Clinton-email-like) Ukraine problem and Buttigieg going down, Bloomberg might just be what Dems need to beat Trump without having to defend (wrong) "socialist" label that Bernie never gave up.

It's kind of funny how the party that generally opposes rich, old, white guys is bending over backward to cater to rich, old, white guys.

How many States cancelled 2020 Rep Presidential Primaries/Caucuses?

This might turn out to be good for Sanders since Bloomberg is vying more for the Biden (center left?) lane than for the Sanders/Warren (far left?) lane. If (when?) Warren drops out then Sanders will own that (far left?) lane while the remainder compete with each other.

To be honest, it will probably be a net positive for Sanders given the potential for splitting Biden's vote, but Sanders is absolutely right on the substance of his complaint: they are literally changing the rules mid-stride for the sake of Bloomberg (and effectively because he's thrown around so much money to buy support and recognition). Would they do this to accommodate Sanders? Almost certainly not. It also sets a poor precedent for the DNC changing its primary rules on a whim to benefit/penalize any candidate it so chooses.

However, I can see the argument for how this might be a _bad_ thing for Sanders because more candidates in the debate might well mean less time for Biden to make a gaffe and/or be attacked.

Lastly, I can definitely see the DNC doing this in hopes of having Bloomberg as a contingency for Biden continuing to falter in the polls, or to keep the primary vote divvied enough to permit a brokered convention by which they would intend to rob Sanders in the event he won as a last resort nuclear option (though it would probably mean the party implodes for at least half a generation).

... or they realized their rule was stupid to begin with. Someone who polls as high as Bloomberg should be allowed to debate others.

AFTER the last black person drops out of the race.

A multi-billionaire white male NYC Republican over age 70 is ideal for Democrats to challenge the incumbent multi-billionaire white male NYC Republican over age 70. The reason to vote for which multi-billionaire white male NYC Republican over age 70 the Democratic Party has is because he has many more billions of dollars that he is giving to the MSM, press and Internet plus for paid staff.

Who should be president? The Democratic Party is going to say the whitest, richest old male Republican who want the job in this election. All that matters is getting rid of Trump.

My suggestion is that the person who agrees to abide by the rule of law and follow the U.S. Constitution should be the President.

So that means, not Trump.

I don't support changing rules in the middle of the game, regardless of how beneficial it may be for the party.

I find it quite amusing that the "woke" party for diversity (mainly of race and gender) is likely to soon find itself hosting a POTUS primary contest between three old white males (Biden, Sanders and Bloomberg) as the only viable choices.

Dropping the debate "qualification" requirement (after having steadily increased it) of having a large (and increasing) number of individual campaign donors is a rather odd rule change and is clearly aimed at including Bloomberg and, as you noted, likely as a backup plan for if (when?) Biden fails to best Sanders.

I generally wouldn't be willing to accord the DNC the benefit of the doubt after 2016; they clearly aren't interested in a Sanders win and they are likely doing this because they believe it will either hurt Sanders or benefit his rivals.

Moreover, Bloomberg more or less bought his way to that level of polling which is obviously problematic in its own right.

It very likely is, or as stated, a way to keep the brokered convention nuclear option alive.

Also the powerful in the DNC and establishment generally don't genuinely care for identity politics, minorities and the like so much as they consider them useful, exploitable tools and a means to an end; they're entirely disposable in their quest for power, and most emphasis on social justice, is in my estimation a way to smoke screen for their consistent lack of economic progressivism which is unpopular with their well-heeled donors (social justice costs them nothing, unlike economic justice).

The changing of the rules now seems rather unfair to candidates that did not meet the criteria that excluded them from previous debates. But I have a hunch that the DNC changed the rules to allow Bloomberg into the debates for an insurance policy. The Democrat establishment does not want Sanders or Warren to win. They see Biden as a weak candidate. He isn't doing all that well with campaign funds. His stump stops are very small in comparison to others and they are concerned over all the talk about future scandals etc. Bloomberg would be a candidate that Biden supporters could get behind. Getting him into the debates is a way of voters to learn more about him incase Biden crashes. Just a thought.
